Sharrod Moore Murder Charge Dropped

Sharrod Moore won a victory Monday that could matter in a few months.

District Attorney Robert S. Smith was absent again when Hinds County Circuit Judge Swan Yerger dropped murder charges against Sharrod Moore in the 1995 killing of Jackson Police Officer Robert J. Washington. Yerger dropped the charges because prosecutors, after indicting Moore twice, could only produce one witness, Harold Hackett, who said that Moore told him he killed Washington.

Public defender Matt Eichelberger live-blogged the hearing for attorney Jim Craig's blog today.

Why wasn't Mr. Smith there? He was there for all the press conferences announcing the arrest and indictments. He was there when he bragged about all the evidence he had against Mr. Moore.

The Hinds Co. DA's office is weak. I had jury duty a couple months ago, and they had the same problem: the prosecution could only produce one witness (the victim) with no physical evidence for a violent crime. The law team down there seems to be asleep at the wheel. I wonder what there prosecution record is.
