Isaac Hayes: 1942-2008

After blogging about Bernie Mac's death yesterday, I wish I was kidding. From CNN:

(CNN) -- Soul singer and arranger Isaac Hayes, who won Grammy awards and an Oscar for the theme from the 1971 action film "Shaft," has died, sheriff's officials in Memphis, Tennessee, reported Sunday.

Relatives found Hayes, 65, unconscious in his home next to a still-running treadmill, said Steve Shular, a spokesman for the Shelby County Sheriff's Department.

Paramedics attempted to revive him and took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 2 p.m., the sheriff's department said.

No foul play is suspected, the agency said in a written statement.

There's something creepy about when they leave in two's: Sammy Davis, Jr., and Jim Henson. John Ritter and Johnny Cash. Now this. I'm bummed. However, my ten-year-old niece just said to me, "He's still alive in Heaven." Isn't that sweet?

Hayes' family, friends and fans are in my prayers.

Ironically, Bernic Mac, Isaac Hayes and Samuel L. Jackson have a movie coming out in November called "Soul Men." Let's pray that nothing happens to Samuel!

I was very sorry to hear this news. One of my favorite Jubilee Jam memories is standing in the rain, umbrella in one hand and a beer in the other, listening to Isaac Hayes several years back. He also co-starred as "The Duke" in one of my all-time favorite movies "Escape from New York." He will be missed.

Isaac Hayes was one bad mother (shut your mouth!)! One of my favorite roles of his was as Jim Brown's sidekick in I'm Gonna Get You Sucka.

I hate for us to lose brothers like these (Bernie and Isaac)because they're irreplacable. Isaac Hayes also co-wrote Soul Man by Sam and Dave. Isaac turned out great despite losing his mother before two and not knowing his father until he was grown. Thank God for strong grandparents. Because Isaac was a high school drop out he worked hard to educate himself and others by giving money, time and his legend to the cause of education, here and abroad.
