In his column today, Clarion-Ledger Executive Editor Ronnie Editor announced major changes in the statewide, Gannett-owned newspaper starting tomorrow, including shrinking news "hole" (space for coverage), dropping the TV supplement and combining sections such as sports and business. He writes:

Most of these changes involve either combining sections, eliminating sections or reducing news space. They are brought about because of a sluggish economy, which has affected a broad range of businesses, including automakers, financial services companies, the housing industry, manufacturers and also newspapers. [...]

He closes with a promise that the dramatic changes will not affect news coverage:

It is our goal to be metro Jackson and Mississippi's primary source of news and information through our core newspaper, our monthly magazine, our weekly publications and our growing number of Web sites. We have a veteran news team with staff members who have decades of experience in covering all aspects of Mississippi, whether that is sports or politics.

This belt-tightening will not affect our aggressive news coverage. You have invited us to be a part of your lives for many years and we are humbled by your loyalty. Our news team understands that it has a responsibility and a duty to chronicle the lives of people who make news and the events that shape it.

It's a commitment that will continue.

I wish some company with the money to do it would seize the opportunity to step in and offer us a decent statewide newspaper. I'm used to dealing with disappointment when it comes to the CL, but how low can they go?
