If you want some fresh air and entertaining football, check out Belhaven College sometime. The Blazers play Bethel (Tenn.) on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Newell Field. The ancient stadium is on Riverside Drive behind Bailey Magnet School.
Coach Dennis Roland's offense is similar to the "Fast Break on Grass" attack Hal "Curse Of The" Mumme used to run at Valdosta State and Kentucky. The Blazers throw the ball most of the time. Instead of using the run to set up the pass, Belhaven uses the pass to set up more passing.
The man who makes Belhaven go is quarterback Sam Husband. Husband, a senior from Tunica, has completed 128 of 212 passes for 1,250 yards and six touchdowns this season. And the Blazers have played only four games. Husband has also thrown 11 interceptions, which explains, in part, why Belhaven is 1-3.
OK, so Belhaven could do a better job of hanging on to the football. And the Blazers could use some help on defense, too. But they're fun to watch and there are plenty of great athletes in NAIA football. So turn off the TV and go Downtown to watch the real thing.
