It's that time of year again ... college football season. As always, Dr. S is here to tell you who's going to do what and why. But just remember, these picks are for entertainment porpoises only. If you're going to be hanging around town, why not check out Mississippi Valley State vs. Southern U. at Memorial Stadium (7 p.m., Saturday). Valley figures to be better in year 2 under Coach Willie Totten. And Southern is always worth watching, especially when the band performs at halftime. Funny how Valley refuses to move its home games with Jackson State down here and then schedules a game with Southern here. Dr. S expects a big crowd, and a good portion of them with be dressed in Jaguar blue and gold. Valley 28, Southern 27.
Ole Miss at Vanderbilt, 11 a.m., Ch. 12 ... Last year, Ole Miss needed a late drive to beat Vanderbilt in Oxford. And Vandy's offense pushed around the Rebel defense all day. Dr. S predicts the Rebels will be singing the blues after this one. ... Vandy 24, Ole Miss 23
Southern Miss at California, 3 p.m. Buffalo Wild Wings will be showing the game on their TVs. Cal had its moments against Kansas State last week, but not enough to win. Dr. S thinks the Eagles will shut down the Bears, the question is, can the Eagles score? USM 21, Cal 10
Oregon at Mississippi State, 8 p.m., ESPN2. This game will be MSU's season in microsm. Will the Bulldogs be able to handle adversity? Will they be able to move the ball? Can they stop anybody? Will Jackie Sherrill be wearing a cool vest? Is there a free ticket waiting for Nike honcho Phil Knight at the gate? No. Oregon 31, MSU 17
Jackson State at Northwestern State, 6 p.m. This the kind of game where JSU has traditionally gotten its clock cleaned in the past. The tradition continues. NSU 35, JSU 10
Alcorn State at Arkansas Pine Bluff ... As long as they're up there, the Braves might as well win. Alcorn 25, UAPB 21.
