40 Years Ago, Maroons Made History

"Ghosts of Mississippi" is an excellent article in the latest Sports Illustrated on the 1963 Mississippi State basketball team which, backed by a courageous college president, defied a court order and went to play black players in the NCAA Tournament. Even if you think you know everything about this story, Dr. S guarantees that writer Alexander Wolff has unearthed much that you don't know. Check it out.

Sports Illustrated has never posted that article online. I just wanted to alert readers that it was in that week's issue of Sports Illustrated. If it's not still in the store, check your local library.

Actually, the article is available online if you're a Mississippian & have a library card. It can be accessed via the EbscoHost databases provided by MAGNOLIA. The MAGNOLIA home page is here. Notes: 1. You will need to contact your local public library for the username/password because it cannot be available online. 2. Make sure you check the Academic Search Elite database: that's the database where you can the Sports Illustrated article in full-text. 3. Another article on the '63 MSU team can be found in the November 1997 issue of the Journal of Southern History, which is not available in full-text online via Ebsco. Hope that helps.
