JFP editor Donna Ladd was awarded the Alvis Hunt Humanitarian Award at the 12th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. banquet Monday night at Jackson State University. Other honorees included Woman of the Year Nsombi Lambright (director of Mississippi ACLU); Man of the Year Alvin O. Chambliss Jr. (attorney); Gailya Porter (Smith Elementary principal); the Rev. John E. Cameron Sr. (Medgar Evers Award); activist Pearl Latham Bailey (Fannie Lou Hamer Award); "Cadillac" George Harris (B.B. King Award); and rapper David Banner (Emmitt Till Award). Dr. Safiya R. Omari was awarded the new Phenomenal Woman Award in honor of the late Nubia Lumumba.
