Jackson Parks and Recreation Offering Sunday Afternoon Cool Down. Need some relief on the sweltering Sunday afternoons Jackson's been experiencing? Well, the Department of Parks and Recreation is going to try and help cool things down! Beginning August 1, 2004, three city pools will be open from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m., depending on the weather. If response is good, other city pools could be opened on a rotating basis around the city on Sundays. These pools will be open this Sunday:
McDowell Road Pool - 2855 Oak Forest
Presidential Hills Pool - 3971 Flag Chapel Road
Russell C. Davis Pool - 2080 Martin Luther King Drive
Pool admission is $1.00 for persons 17 and under, and $1.50 for persons over 17. Call 960-0619 for more information.

Want to Renovate Your Business' Exterior? Apply for a Storefront Improvement Grant
For those business owners who are thinking about rehabilitating or renovating the exterior of an existing commercial building, you may want to apply for a Storefront Improvement Grant with the City of Jackson's Office of Economic Development. Eligible applicants will include property owners, developers and/or tenants of existing commercial and industrial buildings located within the boundaries of eligible Community Development Block Grant target areas and the Enterprise Community. All grant funds made available under this program must be matched dollar for dollar. For additional requirements, an application, and more information call the Office of Economic Development at 960-1638.

National Night Out Kick-Off / Downtown Block Party at Smith Park
Join Mayor Johnson, Chief Moore, neighborhood association representatives and others Monday, August 2, 2004 at 12:00 noon at One Jackson Place as we join forces together against crime in Jackson in an official National Night Out kickoff. Various specialized units from the Jackson Police Department will present exhibitions. You are all invited. The 21st Annual National Night Out is August 3, 2004 and is focused on building police-community partnerships.

The Jackson Downtown Partners and the Jackson Convention and Visitors Bureau are partnering with the Jackson Police Department to sponsor the first ever National Night Out Block Party for businesses in downtown Jackson. This celebration will be at Smith Park Downtown Jackson, Tuesday, August 3, 2004, from 5:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. Activities will include live entertainment, food and presenters. Booths will be set up to provide everyone with crime prevention information.
Everyone who works in downtown Jackson is invited to attend.

Check out the New Jackson Police Museum
The Jackson Police Museum is a great place to discover the long history of great service the Jackson Police Department has provided. From 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday and 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Saturdays, you can stroll through the small museum viewing photographs of officers, memorabilia, newspaper clippings and other artifacts. The museum is located in the newly opened Police Substation at 321 Farish Street in the historic Farish Street District. Admission is free.
