IRVING, Texas – In the light of the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky has announced that the Tulane at Southern Miss football game, scheduled for this Sunday, September 4, has been postponed.
"We have been in contact with the administrators for both universities and we all agree that the focus of our attention should be on the continued safety of the student-athletes, coaches and the lives of those affected by this storm," Banowsky said. "Playing a football game is not our highest priority at this time."
With Tulane and Southern Miss both scheduled to complete their seasons on November 19 the game has been moved to Saturday, November 26. ESPN 2 was scheduled to air the game nationally and the network has indicated that it will attempt to show the game on November 26 at a time to be determined.
On Sunday the Tulane football team, along with its women's soccer team, evacuated New Orleans and made a 9 ½ hour bus trip to Jackson. They are currently housed in the gymnasium at Jackson State University, where they practiced yesterday. However, when Katrina continued its path through Mississippi yesterday afternoon the campus lost power.
At this time the conference is continuing to explore options to assist the athletic teams at Tulane and Southern Miss in the short-term and long-term and will pass along additional details as they become available.
