Major Traffic Signal Project Underway In Jackson
You may have noticed uneven asphalt at some of the major intersections in Jackson or other work being done. That's because the city of Jackson is in the middle of a major traffic signal upgrade project. The upgrades will significantly aid the traffic flow at these intersections. Phase I involves upgrading the traffic signals at seven intersections from the traffic lights that hang from a wire (span wire) to a mast arm signal. Not only will this particular upgrade aid in traffic flow, but the mast arm signal will improve the aesthetics of the intersection.
Additionally, the electronics under the asphalt at the intersections will be upgraded to better communicate with the traffic signal (making signal changes more efficient depending on traffic volume) and to communicate traffic flow data to the city's Engineering Division. Traffic cameras will also be installed at the intersections. This $1.6 million phase will also ensure that intersections with sidewalks are upgraded to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The intersections are:
North State Street and Fortification Street
Robinson Road and Claiborne Avenue
Lynch Street and Terry Road
Eminence Row and Bailey Avenue
Northside Drive and Hanging Moss
North West Street and Northbrook Drive
The upgrades for this phase should be complete in March.
Eight more intersections are planned for upgrades this summer. In addition to all the types of improvements done in Phase I, Phase II intersection upgrades will include lane widening and/or other types of geometrics to improve traffic flow.
