The healthfest is primarily sponsored by the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement (MXGM) to create space to further educate the community about preventative health measures. It will be held from noon until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, 11 June 2005. MXGM is community-based organization which falls under the auspices of the Community Aid and Development Corporation (CAD), a national non-profit entity. Akil Bakari and June Hardwick are two co-coordinators for this event.
During the fair, various providers will provide screenings ranging from cholesterol to high blood pressure. Morning and afternoon workshops on preventative care will occur as well. Basically, these workshops will introduce participants to lifestyle changes and the like that would eliminate hypertension, diabetes, etc.
Throughout the day, local artists ranging from poets to vocalists will perform. Indeed, the healthfest serves dual purposes of celebrating African culture and re-positioning health concerns as a top priority. 601-325-6424.
