JSU's Katrina Response

(Jackson, Miss.) – Jackson State University is thankful to those who have expressed sympathy and offered assistance in response to Hurricane Katrina. We would like to assure the public that we are able to move forward with the 2005–06 academic year, and will do everything within our ability to assist those students and families in need. Accordingly, we will implement the following emergency response measures:

Immediately enroll undergraduate and graduate students who wish to attend Jackson State and are admitted or registered at any college or university closed due to Hurricane Katrina. When necessary, admission and financial aid eligibility will be confirmed during the semester subsequent to enrollment.

Charge in-state tuition rates to students from out-of-state universities closed due to Hurricane Katrina.

Accept and expedite the processing of employment applications of faculty and staff from colleges and universities closed due to Hurricane Katrina.

If students, faculty or staff wish to attend Jackson State temporarily, but maintain their relationship with their home institution, we will accommodate such an arrangement at the request of the home institution.

Work with the affected colleges and universities to establish a central database of student records to facilitate student transfers to other institutions.

Provide 160 rooms to families of students enrolled at Jackson State who lost their homes due to Hurricane Katrina.

Finally, in order to accommodate the needs of students, faculty, families and the public at large, Jackson State will resume registration at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 6, and extend it through Friday, Sept. 9. Classes will resume Monday, Sept. 12, 2005.
