[Stiggers] Caught Looting? Call Cootie McBride

Here's an important message from the McBride family representing the Ghetto Science Team's Emergency Assistance Task Force.

Rudy McBride: "Wise King Solomon said, 'There's a time and purpose for everything.' And during the aftermath of a catastrophic hurricane comes a time for the financially challenged to be composed, patient and unified. As president of the LMHFD National Bank, I'm here to help folk cope with this catastrophe by establishing the Let Me Hold Five Dollars Emergency Loan. The loan will provide folk with a little money so they won't get desperate and loot businesses like Jo-Jo's Discount Dollar Store."

Cootie McBride: "As the people's lawyer, I will provide legal assistance for those individuals who were 'cold busted' looting stores and businesses."

Judy McBride: "A catastrophe causes stress for poor folk who cannot afford limousine service to avoid a hurricane. And folk who have lost their homes are overwhelmed. As a mental health therapist, I will help victims maintain their sanity and deal with the aftermath of a catastrophe."

Tootie McBride: "Need food, water, medical attention? During this unexpected disaster, Nurse Tootie McBride, the Ghetto Science Emergency Medical Assistance team, and of course, the good LORD got yo' back! Also, The McBride family and the G.S.T. want folk to remember: although this may be the beginning of sorrows, the good book says 'those who endure to the end shall be saved' as G.W. makes the world go round."

Portions of Cootie's original statement was edited. He actually said: "As the people's lawyer, I will provide legal assistance for those individuals who were 'cold busted' looting stores and businesses ..... during broadcasts on CNN,FOX,MSMBC, and other national and local television networks." I was hoping that that Cootie's original statement would remain in tact in this column. Oh well. The original statement was a double edged commentary regarding individuals' desperate behavior during a crisis and how the networks loaded our minds with images of poor folk looting and/or looking for food. Man, I thought Cootie's original statement packed the appropriate satirical punch. Maybe what Cootie said was inappropriate. I don't know.

Ken, nothing nefarious; it was edited for space. It's not like we try to protect the "lamestream" around here. And when I read that sentence, it's not very clear as written, as far as what modifies what: "cold busted" during broadcasts ... or ... looting during broadcasts? It's what we call a two-faced construction, which we all do, and often it's not clear to the writer that it's not clear until someone points it out. I think the point is made just as well without it, perhaps better, especially due to the modification issue. I'm sorry if you think otherwise.
