An Ole Miss student and budding entrepreneur named Mac Wadlington, 22, has created what may prove to be the accessory of the season. Wadlington ("like a heavy duck," he says) has printed up hundreds of bright red stickers with a large "F" in the middle in white text. Beneath that are the words "The Mayor."
"At Ole Miss," Wadlington explains, "everyone has these black 'W: The President' stickers supporting President Bush. So I thought, why not have one that says 'F' for Frank? I think there's a real market for stickers with a letter and that person's position."
Wadlington is originally from Jackson and has kept his eye on hometown happenings. "I just see this as a way to express yourself," Wadlington says. "It's not like you can roll your window down and yell at the other drivers, 'Hey, I think the mayor's cool!'" He says he hopes the stickers become as popular as pet rocks or even lava lamps.
Unfortunately, Wadlington will soon leave Mississippi to attend culinary school somewhere in California, New York or Arizona. He does not seem entirely sure where, and eventually decides that it will be at an "undisclosed location."
The stickers have already begun to turn up on some cars around town. Wadlington says that for now, only sex shops have the stickers, particularly "the one by the rubber factory." He says he hopes to have the stickers in more local shops soon. For now, e-mail him at [e-mail missing] if you are squeamish about sex shops. The stickers cost $3.
"The thing about a sticker," Wadlington muses, "is that there's no way for a sticker to be silent. Without stickers, we'd just have to use hand gestures."
