In an tiresome, cynical and increasingly typical move today, the GOP finally came out with a minimum wage proposal in the House that is designed, primarily, to defuse the minimum wage as a political issue in the 2006 elections. How? By tying passage of a hike in the minimum wage to the passage of a permanent tax break on wealthy estates, a measure that has much less broad support that does a minimum wage increase.
According to the story, a minimum wage increase has enough support in the House to pass, but GOP leaders won't bring a straight minumum wage bill to the floor because it doesn't have support of at least 50 percent of Republicans. (With 25 percent GOP support and nearly all Democrats, it would pass easily.)

I read about this a few hours ago, and it made me wanna gag. I just watched an Oprah rerun today about low wage workers barely getting by, so hearing about this stupid bill didn't make me feel any better. You can't even get a whole two gallons of gas on $5.15, and even though $7.25 isn't a whole lot better, those clowns are too greedy to even give that up. And yet, they continue to give themselves raises. Some congressman got a wake up call before when they saw the devastation on the coast. I think they could all use another awakening, Morgan Spurlock style.
