Today, Jackson Free Press Editor-in-Chief Donna Ladd was subpoenaed by the attorney general's office to appear in the upcoming criminal trial of Mayor Frank Melton regarding articles she has published on Melton and guns.

Bummer. I think? Shouldn't they then subpoena other media members from WAPT, WLBT, WJNT and the Clarion Ledger? I would think the defense would try to have any media members disqualified (I don't know all the legalese) as a witness, if that's how it works. But, I'm not an attorney, just stating how I would go at it if you can do that kind of thing.

I hope that this doesn't hamper your reporting, for good or for ill, of this case. You and your staff have done a very good job of offering coverage if this matter, and I would hate to see that squelched. (As a side note, and because I thought of it again while posting my comment, a sidebar on purchasing and learning to properly use a firearm would have been a very interesting sidebar.)

My reporters will be covering this trial the same regardless of who is subpoenaed. It's also helpful to know that reporters often get a subpoena when they want to enter one of your stories into the record. It's not unusual.

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense from an evidentiary point of view. I hadn't really thought about that aspect, as there are plenty of other ways to get the article in. I figured they wanted you to testify about your observations when trailing the mayor for that story (and your other observations at other events), and not just to get the article introduced.

Of course Hood is going to subpoena Ladd. It's obvious from the slant of every article published in this "suppedly" journalistically excellent newsletter where her loyalties stand. Hood knows exacty what he will get out of her.

I think that it great that Donna will be able to speak at this trial. Melton's camp seems to have overlooked the fact that calling people to testify can also open up the door for the prosecutors to ask questions too. In this trial the truth, IMO, will be Melton's biggest hill to climb. All of this windowdressing about how good of a person that he is dosen't have anything to do with the facts that he stepped over the line and should be dealt with as any other individual. I would hate to think about what he would do if he is exonetated. He may even try arrest the people that went against him. He REALLY would be the Ultimate Authority.

Since this appears to have become another trash-Donna-Ladd thread, I don't feel bad at all about completely derailing it with a self-indulgent non sequitur (ME! ME! ME!) by bragging that I was elected Secretary of Mississippi NOW this afternoon, and remain Jackson Area NOW's Public and Community Outreach Chair. Two hats, one Head. :o) I [heart] NOW. I came in thinking it would be a peripheral thing and that the ACLU would be my main focus, but what I found is that NOW's priorities are my priorities: not just pro-choice, Title IX, and other explicitly feminist issues, but also antiracism, antiheterosexism, domestic violence prevention, universal health care, disability rights, and a host of other issues near and dear to my heart. There is nothing that I am very concerned about, in public policy, that NOW is not also very concerned about. And the way it's volunteer-driven, shoestring budget, rejects corporate sponsorship, etc. puts me in a good position to thrive there. I really feel at home in NOW, and I have learned and changed in some very good ways through my participation there. I'm a very happy camper! Cheers, TH

"Swaths of truth"... Ms. Ladd, there are a few swaths of truth I believe your newsletter hasn't touched upon. How about the recent news that Faye Peterson may have violated the law by speaking to Marcus Wright and telling him "you can get out of this"? And as I recall, the indictments out of Jim Hood's office were rife with errors and had to be corrected. Did you report that as part of your continuing team coverage of the Melton ordeal? If so, I must have missed that between coverage of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and homosexuals coming out of the closet. So truth should at least be an attempt at the whole truth, don't you agree?

Copper thief you need to quit being an idiot Here is the story on Marcus Wright and the DA. And here is a thread where bloggers dicussed the errors. In fact it includes much legal speculation and obvious bias of one Mark L. "I'm assuming he's calling the felony charge the MCSOL incident. As I said, I was there. I saw no gun. I saw not indicia of a gun. Nobody I have talked to saw a gun. Nobody I have talked to saw indicia of it. It wasn't a big meeting; and I know that someone called your buddy Kim's show sand said he saw a "characteristic lump" of a concealed weapon. I haven't identified who that person is, yet, though. The person I thought it might have been says it wasn't him. I think the AG is going to have a really hard time proving that charge. I'm aware of at least five people (six, if I count myself) who would be able to testify that they were there, that they observed Melton, and that he did not have a gun. Mark L. Hmmm.....

More from mark.... No, I'm certainly aware that I have been involved in a campaign against Harvey, who instituted polices that made it impossible for my customers and myself to do business with the City of Jackson. Harvey also pushed the Redevelopment Authority to not sell me the block of houses that I wanted to purchase and renovate to rent or sell to law students. I was fairly confident that either Melton or Whitlow would do a much better job not just for me and my interests here in the city but for the city as a whole. I still think that Frank has done a better job than Harvey, and while I am concerned about the Mayor's actions, am in no place to offer my input to him (in fact, the MCSOL event was the only time I've personally seen him since the debate at Murrah). His administration has gotten several of the long-delayed projects I wanted to be involved with going again, however, which has been encouraging. I've had no luck with the Redevelopment Authority. Then he follows up with... Yes, I understand that I am not the best of witnesses. It's better to have someone completely disinterested (though, I derive no benefit regardless of whether I saw a firearm or indicia of one) and there were plenty of those people there. I've talked to a number of them, none of whom have any recollection of Melton carrying a firearm. Well, right here in the first post he is proclaiming that the past mayor kept him from purchasing some houses. Then he goes on to say in the next post "I derive no benefit regardless of whether I saw a firearm or indicia of one" Yet, in the first post he says, "I was fairly confident that either Melton or Whitlow would do a much better job not just for me and my interests here in the city but for the city as a whole." Me! and My interests! tisk, tisk, tisk.... Just read the thread I linked and decide for yourself how biased Harveymustgo is.

The Jackson Free Press writes as if we are always under oath. In other words, we always dig until we get at the truth, (although the administration often does all it can to impede us) and more than that, we always back up our reporting with as many "facts" as we can get our hands on, preferably internal documents, responses to official records requests and court documents. We do this because a) it is good journalism, b) it's imperative for an independent taking on the big boys, not that this keeps the know-nothings from accusing us of being a "socialist rag" anyway, and c) there are plenty of people who have the means and disposition to sue us, should they have the opportunity. When Donna takes the stand, I am sure you will hear her say the same things she has printed at length. There will be no surprises. There will be a journalist describing what she has seen. Many, many people have seen the mayor violate his weapons permit at a misdemeanor level (in a bar, or at a church, or in city hall) at the very least. One of the ironies of the Ridgeway incident (which is not included in this trial) is that if the duplex really was a "known drug house," as the mayor's supporters insist, then the mayor was violating the terms of his weapons permit by entering the house armed. Frankly, if the A.G. wanted, he could subpoena most of Jackson's media for testimony.

copper, there was no need to overblow a typo on the indictments into a major conspiracy—being that both the D.A. and AG and the sheriff made it absolutely clear to the media and the public how many indictments there were on Day 1—including misdemeanors and felonies. If you're familiar with the legal documents world, you know that corrections are made all the time. That was no big deal. The indictments are the same today as they were on Sept. 15. Only irresponsible media would have overblown that into something it wasn't. We've leave that to other folks. (Iron, it's more like miffed mainstream media man. Look at his comment history, what there is of it. It's all about anger toward the JFP, starting with us breaking the Ridgeway Street story and chiding WLBT for trying to take credit for breaking the story—in order words, lying. Take this for what it's worth.)

IG, there are definitely pro-feminist ways that one can interpret the Bible, but it's hard to do. There is a passage in Deuteronomy, for example, that mandates the death penalty for women who are raped in the city and don't shout loud enough for help to arrive. It's really a very depressing book from a women's rights perspective. The good news? By the standards of their time, the biblical authors were almost all feminists. Even Paul, if we assume (as I do) that Timothy was written by his followers as a tribute in the years following his death. Cheers, TH

Harold Bloom also hypothesized, in The Book of J, that the author of the central Pentateuch narrative (not the laws, but the folk stories) was a woman. I don't buy that because I don't think the Pentateuch was written by any single author--I think it was created over time through a huge oral tradition--but women have traditionally been those who retell stories to children of the next generation, so I think that, in practice, most of the stories that would eventually make up the Hebrew Bible were created by women. This is one of the few places where you can start off on one subject and totally end up somewhere else! Kinda fun...except for the occasional argument.

Still think the JFP is better at women's issues than the bible. The women get to actually sign their names to their own writings.

Oh, agreed... In fact, you'd have to look pretty far to find something that isn't any more progressive than the Bible on women's issues these days. I mean, where else can you find a written record of a community, with editorial control in the hands of an all-male hierarchy, where women are kept silent and encouraged to maintain a subordinate position, driving out all competing voices under the authority of a faceless national institution that-- Oh, right. Never mind... ;o) Cheers, TH

You're a good egg, IG. :o) And there certainly is lots of good stuff in the Bible... The best stuff, IMHO, especially given the time period. (Anyone who reads Ecclesiastes and gets nothing out of it is just...weird.) I actually wrote a 336-page Bible guide last summer, have studied the Bible at the graduate level, and can even read a little Hebrew. And where the Bible fails as literature or moral instruction, it excels at being a marvelously exhaustive primary source record of what life was like thousands of years ago. I don't think folks realize how rare documents from the ancient world are, but the Bible would be incredibly special even if nobody ever attached any religious significance to it. Cheers, TH

Good Ledge summary. A woman runs the metro desk, you know. Terribly, but still.

Anyone see Melton's "Dream Team" is falling apart? http://www.clarionledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061113/NEWS/61113035

Sorry I haven't followed the whole thread. But a word of advice, they don't want or expect the "truth' in court, it's a well rehearsed play. Depending on who you are, they'll rehearse it before hand. Depending on what side your on, they'll coach you on the answers. I love a neophyte in the court. Can't never get it right!

Doc, I think you're right about it being a play. However, as we've seen from Melton's past court performances, he doesn't always stick to the script. Or, he can't remember which script he's reading from on a given day. That's what's going to make this one a circus.

Cliff, I don't think Team Melton is falling apart. Washington is tied-up with USA v. Williams, a multiple-count capital murder case in Texas. He can't be in 2 places at once. And the DJ in the Williams case damn sure won't continue a capital murder case so Washington can go try a low-grade weapon-possession case in Mississippi.

Amen Curt. If Melton somehow slips past the initial charges, Craig will be here and he will be the lead attorney on those other cases. Williams is crazy, has prolonged the case due to refusing to stipulate to obvious matters, has run up the expenses of the case exponentially, and has probably created a situation that Craig and no one else can overcome. However, I met several of the lawyers who represented Masoui (911 conspirator). I asked if they were surprised they won and got a laugh and "yes."
