Palm has unveiled the Treo 680, the latest Palm OS-based version of the Treo designed specifically to appeal to a more consumer-focused audience. Available in multiple colors, the Treo 680 offers e-mail, messaging, web access and access to tons of Palm OS applications, along with a VGA camera capable of video capture. It supports MMD and SD expansion cards for up to a few gigs worth of storage, and the PocketTunes interface for MP3 playback.

Engadget has a photo gallery up from the event, and the rumor is the that 680 (which seems a little cheaper in plastics and such than the 700p) will launch at around $199 (according to comments on Engadget) with a contract from many mobile carriers...when it's ready!

that's still cheaper than the razr. Which I'd love, except I find flip phones flimsy for some reason.

The Razr's I've seen have seemed pretty solid...not like the flips of old. (Although the Kyocera SoHo that I had for a while...and have since willed to Donna...worked fine as a flip, nary a complaint.) What I don't know is whether I'd be happy trying to track appointments and respond to e-mail on a Razr. I'm digging the smartphones that are finally figuring out keyboards and making all those Palm OS apps available in a colorful pocket-size unit.

I had a Motorola v330 for an afternoon before I returned it. I didn't like it too much. I'd love a smart phone, but all I really need is something to answer calls and sound an alarm. Simple works for me right now. :)
