Truly Outrageous, Indeed

Q: What do you get when you cross kitschy 1980s cartoon Jem and the Holograms with feminist new wave/punk/electroclash band Le Tigre?

A: The coolest thing on YouTube. (Mild profanity alert.)

Ooooh, I used to looooove that cartoon. I wanted Shana's hair - the cut, not the shade of purple. I came pretty close in my Jheri curl days.

Tom, this reminds me of the most recent issue of Bitch Magazine. Beautiful tribute to Jem. She IS truly outrageous. Truly, truly, truly outrageous.

Thanks for this, folks. :o) Latasha, I am now visualizing you with Shana's hair--what an image! Emily, amen on Jem. I think I might edit this post and remove the word "kitschy," because I didn't mean it in a negative or dismissive way--my niece loved that show, and while I was trying way too hard at age 7-8 to be a manly man (something I gave up on when I got into my mid-teens), I remember the theme song to this day! Ever read Bust...? It has a similar vibe to Bitch, but, well, different. And have I mentioned I'm loving all these Feministing-ish GenX/millennial irony-filled feminist mags, though Ms. is still my personal favorite. Cheers, TH

I need to add the Femisting to my personal blog to remember to check. I also have seen Bust, but now that you've reminded me, I'm going to order that subscription. Bitch is my favorite simply because I don't feel shunned by them so much, and gender culture is just a passion of mine. Bitch also does not seem as judgementmental of the younger feminists. Well, I guess because they're younger. But Ms will always win with the TRUTH of issues we would never know about otherwise. I also encourage you to check out 780 on the radio. Women's Talk. Some of it unnerves me, but GLoria IS one of the founders. Don't care much for the trifle/gossip talk, not because I'm not trifling, but because they need a southern voice in there. But I LOVE the shows regarding money/business/etc. Not just "Here's a girl's show, let's talk about what pisses us off."

Thanks for this, folks. :o) Latasha, I am now visualizing you with Shana's hair--what an image! Uh huh. Some family members and I were going through some pictures today, and we ran across the picture of my big 'do. I was about 15, and one side was shorter than the other (Salt 'n Pepa influence). Yeah, that was a sight. Put big plastic-framed glasses with it, and...let me just stop here. :-) Don't care much for the trifle/gossip talk, not because I'm not trifling, but because they need a southern voice in there. But I LOVE the shows regarding money/business/etc. I don't like a lot of fluff either. It's okay from time to time, but I need enrichment and not just entertainment.
