Bridge collapse in Minneapolis, several confirmed dead - no final number yet

From CNN:

At least three people were killed when an interstate bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota, collapsed Wednesday evening, plunging cars and chunks of concrete into the Mississippi River below.

There were "lots" of injuries, said the state Homeland Security and Emergency Management Department.

The accident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. (7 p.m. ET).

Lt. Amelia Huffman of the Minneapolis Police Department told CNN affiliate KARE it was "not clear at this point what caused the collapse" of the Interstate 35W bridge near University Avenue....Shortly after the collapse, a tractor trailer was burning on the bridge....Witnesses told CNN a school bus filled with children was on the bridge when it collapsed, but they also said the bus did not drop into the water and it appeared that the children had all been evacuated.

Wow. The collapse has even caused the Twins-Royals game for tomorrow to be postponed.

The number of deaths have been revised down to four, but there could still be more once cars are lifted out of the water.

Thanks, Golden. I think I'll change the title to say "several" until they give a final count.

It is my understanding that there are many more bridges in this country to follow, if not repaired. Instead of tearing up Iraq and then trying to rebuild it, our tax dollars would be better spent here in America.

Government wants 756 bridges inspected immediately WAPT also mentioned a list of dangerous bridges in Jackson, and I hope they'll add the list to their Web site soon. Two bridges I remember being mentioned are on Cedars of Lebanon and McRaven Road.
