The "family values" mantra of the national Republican Party must really be in trouble when this is one of their front-runners:
Husband and wife agree that Laura Bush is a model for Mrs. Giuliani. But Judith carries some distinctly un-Laura baggage. Like her husband, she has been married twice before. They also had a secret affair for a year before Mr. Giuliani announced it to the world — and to his second wife, Donna Hanover — at a news conference.
Her relations with Mr. Giuliani's children by Ms. Hanover are by all accounts deeply strained, despite her efforts at rapprochement. And his son and daughter, ages 21 and 17, have said they do not plan to campaign for their father.
There's nothing quite like leaving the mother of your children on television.

Thank you, Donna, for this one! I also have an issue with Guiliani's method of communication with his wife regarding his affair. Of course, his children are upset with him over this, especially if he is as equally heartless when he communicates with them. Can you imagine how they might feel about him? If we look at his mayoral record, as well as his personal behavior, then we get a much fuller picture of a very smart, aggressive, suspicious, vindictive man who doesn't always work in orthodox ways. We also can see by some of his recent moves exactly how he works strategically to get closer to his goal of presidency. (He reconnected after ten years with William J. Bratton, the police chief whom he ousted for getting credit for the drop in crime.) The police chief he appointed after Bratton was a long-time friend who was and has been linked to organized crime. Giuiliani had been briefed on this and even supported him for Homeland Security after he knew of his ties. NY Times links: Link #1 Giuliani and his fight with the School Board: Link #2 (Sound familiar???) The firefighters' union says that Guiliani is not a leader, citing issues from 9/11: Link #3 The list goes on, but this is something to chew on.

Katbird, I know there are also all these substantive issues. And I love that Giuliani—a man who built a crime plan based on gun control, gun control, gun control—is now trying to backtrack into a big supporter of gun rights. Rudy is the kind of president neither the right or the left should want. And the idea that anyone would vote for a man who would announce his divorce to his wife and TV, and whose own kids won't campaign him, just shows how desperate the GOP has become. It would be a great time for another one of those party switcheroos. The GOP ought to consider stopping the wink-wink racism and hypocritical pandering to the religious right, and get back to its roots of being a compassionate party that also doesn't believe the size of government should spin out of control because someone wants to regulate something (for easy money or cheap votes) without evidence that it needs to be. Rudy is a clear symbol of the trouble the party is in.

Yeah, except that he's not, Iron. He has supported many policies—including violation of individual rights—that make progressives' toes curl. (And announcing your divorce so you can marry your mistress on TV is as bipartisan of a disgusting move as anyone could imagine.) I do think he is an independent spirit in the true sense of the word—an independent, power-hungry cad. I wouldn't think either party would want to claim him.

I explicitly DISCLAIM him. I think he is misinformed as to what a conservative and republican mean. Wait... Nevermind. I think most politicians now are misinformed as to what the terms democrat, republican, liberal, conservative mean.

Well, here's a serious campaign wrinkle: Giuliani's Daughter Backing Obama: The daughter of Republican hopeful Rudy Giuliani has signaled she's backing Democrat Barack Obama for president. According to her Facebook profile, Giuliani's 17-year-old daughter, Caroline, belonged to Democrat Barack Obama's Facebook group "Barack Obama (One Million Strong for Barack)." That there's some cad-boy karma for ya.

Speaking of Obama, did you see what Romney said about him? “I mean in one week he went from saying he’s going to sit down, you know, for tea, with our enemies, but then he’s going to bomb our allies. I mean he’s gone from Jane Fonda to Dr. Strangelove in one week.” I don't really care for Romney but that was funny. Back to the topic: Giuliani is pretty shady but who out their isn't? I guess Kucinich isn't shady. He tells you exactly what he thinks (to his demise). Instead of just attacking the Repubs, who are you guys supporting? Maybe we can start a page on the people you support rather than loathe. I thought you guys were against negative attacks. That's all I've seen, well, I guess the targets political leanings determine a great bit. Where are the positives of any candidate? Last week iTodd was busting the Republican candidates. Where's the love for anybody??

Dave, post your opinions and do not berate other users if you want to continue posting. There has been much conversation, to date, on people's views, pro and con, on presidential candidates, and that will continue over the next year. Personally—and you are posting on MY personal blog at the moment—I loathe Rudy Guiliani due to his treatment of his wife and of New York City. I know a lot about both and will continue to talk about those things and other issues. State. your. opinion. without devolving into berating others here. It's the rules. And discussion of the rules must happen in e-mail: . Any further comments about the way this site works will be deleted without comment. Trust me on it.

I'm a Demo and I sure wouldn't want Giuliani in my party. To tell you the truth, I don't get the romanticism behind him. I think any mayor would've done what he or she had to do if in power during a terrorist attack.

Well, I think he got some brownie points because Bush was acting like a scared, lost kid right after the attacks. The contrast made him look good. But that doesn't mean he's not a cad.

Fruitty Rudy is the poster child for this party. They should put his image on their signage. You know what I mean - clean cut, family values, high moral character, church going, god-fearing, country-loving, looking for another war to get us in, say one thing and do another, et al. I'm so impressed by Rudy and their other lineup of candidates that I'm thinking of voting this way this time.

She voted her conscious recently and helped move a Bush's nominee, a Mississippi ex-judge, to a vote of the Senate, for the 5th Circuit. There are already too many hateful and no good republicans on that court. Even the judges on the United States Supreme Court considers the judges on the 5th Circuit to be crazy and beyond redemption. Feinstein angered the Democrats on this vote and got applause from Senator Spent Lott for crossing party lines. We no longer want her after that. Just kidding!

Ray, the problem is any white male from Mississippi is unqualified in their eyes. All of us. Anyone else is fine. If you're white and from Mississippi, all liberals consider you trash. That's the only reason they get stalled.

If you're white and from Mississippi, all liberals consider you trash. Iron, that's a ridiculous statement. Actually, if you're progressive-minded, they think you're amazing—because it's people like Charlie Ross and Haley Barbour who they think populate and run this state. These judicial choices are getting stalled because they have records that are antithetical to democracy, the Constitution and the constituencies they are supposed to represent. I swear, some people would complain if Bush put Hitler up and the damn "liberals" tried to stop them. And it's not like Southwick supporters want the same "he should get anybody he wants" standard applied to judicial appointees they don't approve of. Come on. Both Southwick and Pickering are terrible choices, and anyone with half an intellectual brain cell knows it. Come on.

Not true Ironghost. Bush is clearly trying to pick arch-conservatives and I know what an arch-conservative really is. There isn't any debate about this. There are many white males from Mississippi I will vote for no matter their political party. I have done it many times before. I'm no fool though, and neither are most black people. We know better than given credit for what's good for us and what isn't.
