The Mississippi Supreme Court has granted Rep. John Reeves' emergency petition and reversed Hinds County Judge Winston Kidd, who ruled earlier in the week that the re-vote in the election between Adrienne Wooten and Reeves in District 71 was canceled. Writing for the Court, Justice Oliver E. Diaz Jr. vacated Kidd's Writ of Mandamus and Writ of Prohibition: "[T]he re-vote should be allowed to proceed as directed by the Hinds County Election Commission." The Court denied requests by both sides for oral argument, and said it will issue an opinion "in due course."

Twenty-four years can bring in a whole lot of relationships. Wooten's winning of that office was akin to her killing the POPE.

The re-vote is perfectly justified due to the terrible management of the election commission. The election was so badly handled I don't know why all candidates have not sued. Next election, Go watch what happens in the basement of the courthouse.

the fact that he's getting a re-vote was probably influenced by his gender/race/rel'ships, but he does actually deserve one. the way they handled those precincts was atrocious. irregularities are irregularities. it doesn't matter who the victim is. but, it'll be interesting to see if they grant a new vote the next time when it's a democrat or black person that's the victim...

bottom line, the election process in those split precints was handled horribly. Both candidates are due a fair election that is properly managed. The election commision should be extremely cognizant of the poll workers selected to work in precints where there is a split ballot.

I agree with the last 3 statements. Despite my preference for Wooten, if Reeves is to be defeated it should be in an election free of questionable and glaring irregularities and he has every right, as Al Gore tried in his election, to challenge those irregularities. There are mistakes made in most elections, but there always should be an effort to make sure that every vote is counted and that the voters are always given the right choices without fraud or incompetence skewing their perceptions. Not making that required effort is tantamount to disenfranchisement, and no one here should advocate that.

I want to make another point. Election challenges are not really protecting the candidates; but rather the voting rights of the electorate. If there are any problems we ALL lose the integrity of our votes. the candidates should be an afterthought in this matter.

Be honest... how many of us volunteer to be poll workers? Unless you have first hand knowledge, you have no idea how hard it is to get poll managers or poll workers. We can suggest that elections commissioners stay on top of poll workers and all of that, but I have first hand knowledge of election commissioners calling and begging people to work. Back in the day, there was a time where people gladly worked, and would take off of work to work the polls. However, now, it is a different story. I don't know what could have been done or what should have been done, but how can you hire reliable people to work when the people who are reliable are not stepping up to work. Just food for thought. I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong, just challenging more people to get involved with the process, not just talk about it.

They need to advertise a number or a location where a person can volunteer. Tom gave me information a while back on who to contact to become a poll worker: they gave me such a run around that I gave up. The direct number that I was given said, "We don't handle that," and, "I don't know who you would call." I was a poll worker in Louisville, KY, and would love to be one again.
