Isn't this special? SportsJournalists.com is reporting that The Clarion-Ledger is dropping their Southern Miss sports beat. That's interesting news considering that the Ledger supposedly relies on its sports beat to keep readers, as the rest of the paper goes to pot. Also, staffers over there are complaining that they're not getting Christmas bonuses for the first time this year—and that the publisher is getting a new hardwood floor put in his office, creating lots of construction noise.

Dropping the Southern Miss beat? OK, I'm officially done with the Clarion-Loser.

So, they have given up even the pretense of being the "state' newspaper?

It's not surprising. I checked out the new site and made the mistake of looking at the bloggers page. Their choices leave a great deal to be desired. I don't think a single one resides in Jackson unless it's the Regonacian guy. Nothing against the folks outside Jackson but since the Ledge takes up a city block in the middle of downtown a blogger from the area would have made sense.

So, they have given up even the pretense of being the "state' newspaper If they have, they damn well better start covering Jackson better—and not slanting coverage of Jackson to appeal to city-haters. They can't have it both ways. Or, better way, they can't have it neither way. They've got to do *something* well to survive, one would think. I'm really shocked to see them cutting sports. They start chipping away at that beat, and they won't have anything left over there that people give a damn about.

Take your stabs at me all you want, Lambda, but at least USM had a winning season. What did Ole Miss do?

Donna: I'm really shocked to see them cutting sports. They start chipping away at that beat, and they won't have anything left over there that people give a damn about. That would be at least the second sports position that's been eliminated in just a little over a year. The Clarion Ledger never did hire anyone to replace Michael Wallace when he left.

Honestly, I never understood why they didn't cover LSU sports. There are tons of LSU alums in the metro area (and statewide). When I moved back to the area after 7 years in Baton Rouge I was shocked CL didnt have more info. The BR Advocate always covered USM sports.

Well of course there are tons of LSU alums... It's all the gumbo, corndogs, and beer they consume. They're huge! :-)

Readers are ticked off at The Clarion-Ledger for gutting sports coverage.
