Just when you thought that the Jackson Police Department isn't up to the challenge posed by escalating crime, they prove you wrong. Per The Clarion-Ledger tonight:
The Jackson Police Department raided two adult bookstores Monday afternoon and arrested an owner and the clerks working at those stores, said Sgt. William Gladney of the Vice/Narcotics Unit. Gladney said that an undercover officer entered Secrets adult bookstore at 775 E. McDowell Road and the Adult Video & Bookstore at 501 E. McDowell Road and purchased sex toys at each location. After getting a warrant, police returned about 4 p.m, made arrests and confiscated sex toys at each store, Gladney said. It is illegal in Mississippi to sell any device designed to stimulate human genitals, Gladney said.
We feel safer tonight. Do you?

Everyone, recall that this is the JPD that did not report one arrest for drug sales or manufacture in 2006. Put another way, they have now collected more dildos in one night than they did drug dealers in all of last year.

I'm glad you posted this, as I had planned to make a topic out of it. Yes, I feel very safe tonight, knowing that dildos are off the street and won't come out of the woods and attack me. I no longer have to look over my shoulders if I have to stop at a gas station or ATM machine at night. I also think all the women in Jackson feel safe as well. *sarcasm off* Don't we have much bigger fish to fry in this town and state than trying to keep enjoyments out of the hands of adults in the privacy of their own homes? Last time I looked, a dildo never robbed, raped, kill anyone or sell drugs. No wonder Mississippi continues to be the embarrassment of the nation.

(potential NSFW links ahead) I guess Walgreen's, Rite-Aid, and CVS are next! Suck It Melton! No, really! And take the MS Supreme Court and the backwards ass (chortle) legislators who passed this stupid law with you! BTW: Where did Michael Taylor get the crack he sold to that woman he carjacked? Not to digress or anything... ;-)

Well, what are we going to do about it? I think it's honestly one of the dumbest laws on the books here. If I were the prosecutor, I would *NEVER* prosecute something like this. Puh. Lease. What a waste. However, we need to get it off the books. Like, this session. So, let's move for a repeal.

Well, Law Clerk, The Chamber has a request out for their upcoming legislative agenda. This would be worthy of pursuing; I just don't have the nerve to suggest it! Gladney stated you could not sell anything designed to stimulate the genitals so, what I'm really wondering is: can you give them away? Would that be illegal too? In other words, is possessing a sex toy a crime or is it just selling same? How silly! It's even crazier to keep sending in JPD. This is 2007 or at least I thought it was. Agreed it is predominantly anti-female.

styro, it's not Jackson. It's the whole state. I'd guess there aren't many, if any, adult stores in most towns of Mississippi... So, obviously, Jackson's raids will hit the news. Also, your list of toys is inaccurate. Butt plugs aren't illegal... The butt is not, er, part of the genitals. One could argue that all toy shops could sell "anal toys" (ones generally marketed for anal and labeled as such) and legally get away with it. Sort of like "tobacco stores" sell hookahs, bongs, and pips... Cuz, you know... It's for tobacco. Remember folks, dildos don't kill people... People kill people. It's so bizarre that you can buy a gun but you can't buy a harmless sex toy. I can't wait to see MeltonCo raid a house in NE Jackson. You know, those passion parties are bangin' out the big bucks because of this law and more than a few ladies are making a killing in the suburbs.

Chris, next time a politician says that he is for 'limited government,' 'rights of the people,' etc... ask him why we have something like this stupid law and what he is going to do to repeal it. I think we need to ask some of the more conservative folks from our government why an adult cannot purchase a sex toy in MS. In 2007. Or will we be forced to all use cigars? ;) And Knol, when did the butt leave the realm of genitals? Here is the statute: § 97-29-105. Distribution of unlawful sexual devices A person commits the offense of distributing unlawful sexual devices when he knowingly sells, advertises, publishes or exhibits to any person any three-dimensional device designed or marketed as useful primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs, or offers to do so, or possesses such devices with the intent to do so. A person commits the offense of wholesale distributing unlawful sexual devices when he distributes for the purpose of resale any three-dimensional device designed or marketed as useful primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs, or offers to do so, or possesses such devices with the intent to do so. Any person, other than a city attorney, county prosecuting attorney or district attorney, who shall sign an affidavit charging an offense prescribed by this section shall file a bond in the amount of five hundred dollars ($500.00) at the time such affidavit is lodged. Such bond shall be conditioned that the affidavit was not filed frivolously, maliciously or out of ill will.

C'mon Law... I'm guessing by your name that you'd see the obvious loophole... "human genital organs..." The anus, rectum, and all their friends are NOT a genital organ. Interestingly, a "prostate tickler" would be considered a sex toy since the prostate is considered part of the male sex genitals (I'm guessing they exist though I've never seen one and don't want to Google through what I may see at 7AM). A toy would strictly need to be marketed as an "anal toy" with no reference to genitals, ie, penis, vagina, and their respective parts. How someone uses it is up to them (see the reference about tobacco shops that sell water bongs and hookahs). Still, I'm SO curious why we don't see MeltonCo's Moral Majority infiltrating the houses in NE Jackson that host dildo-loving "passion parties." I think this law would be overturned once an affluent Suzy Homemaker goes to jail for selling those evil and murderous, vibrating rabbits. Sorry to get so vulgar this early in the AM but this is just ridiculous... I'm a man that has no desire for sex toys and get miffed by this. Why the hell aren't more women screaming and yelling? (I could have made a joke at this point.)

pikersam is so correct... the Trojan/Elexa AND the Durex brands with vibrating ring are sold at Walgreen's, RiteAid and CVS even tho the condom brands state they aren't available in a number of states including Mississippi in all of their advertising. Come on Frank, I dare you to go up against the lawyers of Walgreens. I "double-dog" dare you! But do it like you've done the little independent shops. Go in with guns blazing and handcuffs flying. Please arrest the Walgreen's cashier and photo department rep! Don't try and hide it via a letter to Walgreen's! Man up and do it in your bold, don't care kind of style! So then the Walgreen's lawyers can bitch slap you AND the stupid state law at the same time!

Well, Law Clerk, after reading the statute posed above, I, as a layman, am tempted to ask: Can we use or sell "flat" products meant to stimulate the genitals? I mean, it seems only 3-D devices are banned. When a private home is searched by the police and a 'gasp' vibrator is discovered, is it confiscated? Does the City sell this contraband at auction? Or, are they destroyed with drugs, etc. I think we need to organize a march on the capitol with flat B.O.B.'s and the like. Damn, what a society!

Jo-D does make a good point... It's time one of these businesses takes this to the supreme court. But, would the lawyers of Walgreens or Super D bother to challenge this in court? I mean, would they want to be painted as 'deviants' and boycotted nationally by zealots like the American "Family" ASSociation (appropriately based in Mississippi and most likely behind the legislation)? We've tossed around the idea of protesting gun shows with signs that say "Dildos don't kill!" and "Dildos not guns!" to highlight the insanity of this legislation. I still find it shocking that you can get a gun, possess one on your person, and even find places to shoot them indoors, but you can't buy something to stimulate you or your partner's genitals. C'mon... If a child finds a vibrator and points it at another child, no real harm is done. BTW, possessing and using a "3-d genital stimulator" is not against the law. You just can't buy them. But, I'm still unclear if they can be shipped? Probably not since they are still technically "purchased" in Mississippi via ether. Meanwhile, I can go buy a carton of cigarettes (for very cheap), a gallon of whiskey (subsidized by the state), and water bong (sold legally) for, er, my cigarettes. I can also download pr0n via a cable monopoly approved by the city... I love this damned state and the old, senile farts that run it.

I rarely respond anymore with the imminent move, however, this is one 'controversial' topic that I simply cannot disregard.....Is this the same JPD who raided these locations for sex toys that is crying out for new recruits due to our numbers being down for law enforcement personnel who are the 'blanket of security' for this town? The same JPD that is having to reconstruct the requirements for residency for those employed as law enforcement personnel in an effort to draw from a larger populus to increase the numbers? The same JPD that took officer's OFF of the fight in crime (burglary, assaults, sex crimes, homicides, etc, etc.) in an effort to control the distribution of sex toys? Please, someone give me a break! I do not refrain from walking in my neighborhood for exercise out of fear that someone will rob me at dildo point, nor do I jump at every sound during the night out of fear of a nipple clamp breaking into my home and attaching itself to me! Clearly this brand of 'justice' is another of the 'personal' interests of the mayor rather than applying police practice to the effort of lowering the staggering rise of crimes in this city! I would NOT call the police because I found a cock ring on my front lawn...I would laugh. I WOULD call the police if I find a hypodermic needle in my yard from the high rate of drug usage in this city. So tell me...is this an effort on Melton's part to distract our focus from the crimes in this community to that the Melton War on Sex Toys? Clearly, he has not succeded in the fight against crime, apparently this is the ONLY fight he feels he has any measure of winning! Unfortunantly, as the rate of elderly crime victims has risen within the recent months, I seriously doubt that even our elderly see the point of fighting sex toys in comparision to fighting for our way of life!

So tell me...is this an effort on Melton's part to distract our focus from the crimes in this community to that the Melton War on Sex Toys? Katie D I think only fool wouldn't consider that Melton is trying to deflect attention away from something by doing this. I wonder how many planes full drugs they could land at Hawkins Field while raiding a couple of sex shops? Where is the 'West Jackson Tin Foil Hat Brigade?' Or, how many people can the Wood St gang sell drugs to, then steal their car, their phone, and threaten to rape them during the time it took to plan this big investigation? SafeCity folks? But, really, the Mayor is just looking for a way to Mrs. Barrett-Simon's heart - to be her friend. "I've known Margaret 25 years, but I don't know how to approach her," he said. "If anybody in Jackson can help me figure out a way to get a better relationship with Margaret Barrett-(Simon), I'm listening." Awww... He's such a sensitive little guy. It's a toss up right now between the Doc's "Melton is a dildo" comment and Katie D's "midnight nipple clamp attack" for funniest comment on this thread.

A big problem with Melton's relationship with Barrett-Simon, I suspect, is that she too has known him for 25 years and has not fallen under the spell of the corporate media's attempt to turn him into some kind of folk hero. He doesn't dig people who resist his attempts at brainwashing. They become targets of his attempts to discredit, and disrespect them, at all costs.

I recently spoke with a woman who hosts such parties -- she calls them "slumber parties." I assumed she lived in Louisiana and she corrected me with "Magee, MS." When I asked her if she was worried because selling vibes, etc. was illegal, she told me it was not. I didn't argue (and got kudos from my husband for not arguing), but I think people who are hosting these parties aren't being told they could go to jail over this. I was pretty surprised at that. Then again, maybe the police officers in Magee have something better to do . . .

As a person who deals with men and women therapeutically with issues of sexual dysfunctional issues and secondary to so many causes, i.e., cancer, hypertension, prostatic surgery, death of a significant other and the list goes on, I would like for mr. frank to tell me in his own words just what in the hell is a "SEX TOY." A toy for him could be another person's sexual salvation. There are men who have had the penis removed secondary to organ cancer. So, would you, could you really keep this person from buying some type of prosthesis (dildos)? Women who have had a mastectomy can have breast implants or other enhancements for the appearance of hiving their breast. This is just too stupid! This is all too sick for me and it seems that frank gets fixated on boys an toys every time he gets his a$$ in a crack.

NYC chased the sex shops out of midtown Manhattan but designated a zone "red light district" if you will, for these businesses. By the way, my company provides materials to several sex toy manufacturing companies in the San Fernando Valley just North of Los Angeles. These businesses employ dozens of workers and do several million dollars business.

I'm sorry, I thought I was reading an article about the Taliban. You refer to a land where its illegal to buy a beer on a Sunday and sex toys are banned. Oh, this is in the USA?

The US Supreme Court gives new meaning to Alabama's backwards ass law banning sex toys. Word for today: pecuniary Hero quote: 'My motto has been they are going to have to pry this vibrator from my cold, dead hand. I refuse to give up' And in other Alabama news: Alabama couple celebrates 80th wedding anniversary. He's 97, she's 94. You do the math. Ah, sweet home Alabama Yes, I got this from FARK.com //// too good to resist////

OK Blogging Buddies, nut melton and his fruit cakes have finally made Jackson a safe City by locking up the dildos. NOW I can sleep at night. Next on the agenda is for nut melton and his fruit cakes to find the person(s) you stole the $5,000.00 out of the safe at police headquarters on State Street.

Love this... "It's absolutely outrageous an attorney general would squander our tax dollars and barge into our bedrooms and tell us what we can and cannot do in Alabama," Nall says. "We have real crime in Alabama." So she has organized a "Sex Toys for Troy King" drive, in which she encourages people to mail the devices to the AG's office in Montgomery. Basically, a Libertarian that campaigned for governor in Alabama has started a "sex toy drive" where all the sex toys get sent to to the Attorney General of Alabama.

Anybody watch WLBT's 10pm newscast last night? Reporter Kandiss Krone went undercover to the adult video store on McDowell Rd. and bought a sex toy. Later, she walked into the owner's office and said who she was and told him that selling sex toys in Mississippi is illegal. He tried to pretend he had no knowledge of the product being out there. When Lee Vance was asked about it, he said that raiding sex shops is not priority for the JPD and that their time and resources are much better spent fighting crime. I would've felt much safer knowing that these toys were off the street (sarcasm off), I'm glad the JPD will not waste their time on war on sex toys.
