Ever since the pet food recall, I've been worried about what my cat, Sunshine, and my mom's dog, Midnight, have been eating. I've been reading labels to avoid anything with gravy so I can avoid wheat gluten, and even if there is no gravy, I still read the can to see if there is wheat gluten in it. I decided to buy a dog food recipe e-book so that I can make my own safe-to-eat vittles.
I got the PDF here, and if you look at the list of 140 recipes, they have all kinds of wacky names like Bow Wow Burritos and Mutt Loaf. Here's one for "Aunt Bianca's Dog Biscuits":
2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup nonfat dry milk powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 egg -- beaten
Flavoring: Meat drippings, broth or water from canned tuna (enough to
make a stiff dough).
Combine flour, powdered milk and garlic powder in a medium sized
bowl. Add beaten egg, flavoring and mix well with hands. Dough
should be very stiff. If necessary add more flavoring.
On a well floured surface, roll out dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut
with shaped cookie cutters of your choice.
Place biscuits on cookie sheets and bake at 350 degrees for 30
minutes.
As greedy as Midnight is, he'll probably love them.
The download also has a book with 100 cat food recipes with names like Better Than Grass Salad, Cheese Please and Diarrhea Cure (wish I had that a couple of months ago). I think Sunshine may enjoy the salad and anything with fish in it.
I'll cook some of these up and let you know what they say - or meow and bark. :-)
