Two rap sessions... Nice. Then maybe Kaze, we can *really* blame it on the rap and "hip hop." What about the females? Do we have another camp set up for them? (Serious question here.)

I guess we should assume from the materials the city is distributing about this event is that the City of Jackson is organizing a free event for Christian kids only? I got a copy of the forms parents are signing yesterday; will post when I get a chance. Is it clear to everyone that, in order to go to the camp, the kids are agreeing to volunteer to work for the city no more then 40 hours a week? It sounds like the "payment" for the work is the camp. And they are all signing media releases saying that their images can be used in promotional materials and video for the city.

He's fooled a lot of people, LawClerk. It's no more shocking that parents who have severe drug and financial problems themselves would believe that he's a savior for their children than well-to-do people in North Jackson believing that he's some kind of cure-all for crime. The parents probably look at it and think, "Well, if he is up to something negative, then the authorities and the media would have busted him years ago." In other words, we shouldn't hold them to a higher responsibility than we hold the rest of the community. They're being used, too. Everyone, starting with the state and Don Taylor, need to start stepping up the scrutiny of Melton's mentoring strategies.

I'm concerned about the legality of a city sponsored camp that contains Bible study. Isn't this akin to having bible classes at public schools? I'm all for values but think that forcing kids to attend classes on Christianity ought to be reserved for faith-based summer programs.

We'll leave that to the civil-libertarian lawyers to sort out for us, but the questions this raises are numerous: 1. How can the city pay for work by children with a week-long camp that is extremely regimented and leaves them little free time? 2. How can the city's payment camp be Christian-based, at a Christian camp that requires only Christian activies. The man who runs it is a reverend, as I understand, and the sheriff down there, who set it up, also has said that he is a reverend. I mean, Bible camps are great, but how can the city take responsibility for one? 3. What is the procedure for choosing the kids/families who can participate? Who gets turned away? (I mean, they might not be beating the door down; I don't know.) 4. Who are the special guests, and what are their qualifications to counsel children? 5. Does the state have no concern about who is going (are there any witnesses under protection, for instance?) and the fact that a man who recently had restrictions about not having minors in his care is suddenly conducting such a camp for Jackson kids out of town where it is hard to monitor? 6. Is anyone from DHS attending to monitor the camp? 7. Does it not raise concerns for people that Melton created a dangerous situation for children by pulling a schoolbus over on the interstate to get a hug? 8. Who is monitoring the safety standards down there -- for instance, making sure that the pool (which apparently is the biggest in that whole area) is kept clean? (Remember that a kid drowned in a dirty pool at the Farish Y on Melton's watch.) 8. What happens if a kid drowns? It seems clear that the city and the citizens will be held liable? 9. What kind of scrutiny is City Council giving this? Clearly, with Goldia Revies organizing this, this is a city function, and thus the citizens are responsible. What else should we be asking?

Oh, and I should add another relevant question: 10. Does Col. Don Taylor care about what happens to the kids in the care of his "good friend" Frank Melton? Does his boss, Haley Barbour? That's where this buck should ultimately stop—with the men who have the power to force scrutiny on the Melton mentoring programs. My vote is that they will not pay attention as long as Melton is "helping" young African Americans. I don't think they care any more about these kids than they do about what has happened to the kids in the training schools on their watch. Just an opinion, but show me the evidence otherwise if you want to change my mind.

Well, can a city government sponsor a faith-based program when they're offering no alternative? Don't know much about this, but I thought that city activities would need to be accessible to ALL the kids, i.e., those who are of other religious faiths as well as no faith. Would be interested in thoughts from Brent or other ACLU folks on this.

I think kids in Jackson need summer programs. Isn't that what the Parks & Recreation department has done in the past? I'm curious what other programs were offered in other years. It seems to me Melton often reinvents the wheel, at times with redundant or illegal modifications, instead of building on the work of others in the past.

How about that Melton is 'renting' the JPS school bus to transport the children down there? He is making this like he is 'personally' putting the camp then uses City equipment, etc... I sure hope that Judge is proud he allowed him to be around minors again. So, they are going to film the children so they can make a promo video? This man is sick! Is there anything he doesn't use? The fact that so many children are excluded, and that these guys have to work for the City is wrong.

More from Melton's Youth Camp.... Pike, how do you find this junk? LOL 2. I believe faith-based camps should be privately funded, and I'm a devout Christian. To me, separation of church and state means that the government can't tell you how to worship, and I feel like that's what Melton is doing with this if children of other faiths are excluded. As far as transportation goes, Melton should have rented a charter bus on his own dime. They're not hard to get, and they have restrooms. I noticed that Bible study is at 8:00 and Basic Reading is at 9:00. Shouldn't these times be reversed? It would seem that it is easier to study the Bible when you are capable of reading. Here are the problems that I see: 1) A minor under the age of 15 can not work, 2) a person under the age of 18 can not enter into a contract, and 3) if there parents sign the contract which requires the minor to perform labor for the camp is that not indenturing them? One of you attorneys out there, is indenturing legal anymore?

Well, from the way I've personally heard Melton talk to women, I think he should be kept far, far away from young women. Of course, I'm not convinced of his positive impact on young men, either. I guess the question, though, is why he wants to use the resources to only benefit young men, though. That's a legitimate question. And many have pointed out that they tend to be young men from certain neighborhoods, and at least some of them are children of the men who lived in his house and went to his camps more than a decade ago.

Jefferson Davis County is the county where I was born and raised, so let me tell you a little about it. The county is rural, economically depressed, with a high unemployment rate and a low median income ($10,000 less than the median income for the state). More than 30% of adults over 25 do not have a high school diploma. It recently had its county school district taken over by the state. It also has a reputation for hosting a lot of illegal drug activity and sales (and has seen some major drug busts in the past 10-15 years). This has even been written about in The New York Times. In other words, it is fertile ground for the likes of Frank Melton.

You Frank hataz just can't stand that he's actually DOING SOMETHING about crime. Even if it is a perfunctory gesture, and almost certain to have no lasting effect whatever. The point is, he's DOING SOMETHING. Like Bush DID SOMETHING about terrorism by invading Iraq. So what if it doesn't work, or distracts us from the search for steps that actually would work, or makes things much, much worse? You libs hate men of action. That's your problem. You'd rather have Harvey Johnson and Kofi Annan sit around and read studies and convene blue ribbon panels until they're blue in the face. What you need to do is just get out there in the streets and start knocking over buildings and blowing sh*t up. Shake things up a little. See what happens. Can't be worse that the way it was before, right? I said, am I right?

I wonder if this will be a military-like boot camp. This schedule is nearly akin to the one I had when I went to ROTC summer camp between my 10th and 11th grade years. We were awaken at 4am by the sound of a stick banging against a wash tub. We also had to make our beds and be dressed for PT by 4:30. This reinforced the notion that joining the military wasn't for me, even more so than Full Metal Jacket. Speaking of FMJ, I wonder what kind will be the "Private Pyle" of the camp.

Here we go again. What's with this guy (fm) and these young guys????? Why not have a camp for young girls and guys? On the news last night, fm said that he would hire all of the guys who "pass" the camp (test, I guess) with the City: "Picking up paper and cutting grass." This is the job he has offered all young black males. I guess the idea is to get them ready for their green and white stripped prison suits or ORANGE as we saw in Pikersam's video. Cutting grass and picking up paper is not a bad thing and can be used to teach good work ethics: It is a bad thing when it is designed for all Black males and it is the only arm of the City that melton will expose these kids to. With all of the City departments, could there be an opportunity for these youngsters to work and be mentored in something that would be a positive career building track. A lot of the kids are already great with computers. frank has a black breeding farm guaranteed to produce great criminals. Has Goldia Revis lost her mind? She had done a pretty good job of staying under the radar; however, this involvement puts her up front and liable. frank is out of control! He says that he will tear down the A-1 Pallet Co. because he does not have time to wait for the Judge to rule again. The man is sick and who is "sicker" are the citizens of Jackson.

Oh, and if it's some of "exchange" of any type—or a job interview as that made it soundd like—then the city is in this up to their/our ears. So, let's see: He loads up a JPS school bus full of young men, drive them to Jeff Davis County to a Christian activity camp, then make them keep the above schedule every day, so he can decide who to "hire" to pick up grass for the city. With mentors like that.

I understand that these children need help, but why can't he pay for anything out of his pocket? He's always full of ideas that cost the taxpayers. Bad enough we have to pay ALL of his buddies who he found cushy jobs for, now we have to FIND extra money to pay for all his lame schemes to get close to young men. Oh, I guess they'll just cut out more services that the taxpayers are paying for, but won't receive! YANK FRANK!

I would like to know how they can sign a release to "Mayor's Summer Camp" when it is not an 'entity' with the State of Mississippi. All parties are directed to sign off to the "Mayor's Youth Camp" not the City of Jackson, not TV3 Foundation, and not Frank Melton. Yet, it is the "Mayor's Youth Camp" associates and volunteers that are directing the activities at Camp Melton. So, who is actually underwriting this camp? Who is the entity or non-profit that is running this camp? Who is liable? Is it insured? Bonded? Is it regulated under any policies and procedures by a Board, the MSDHS, the City of Jackson, or any agency within the State? This seems highly illegal at this point since the 'City' is not actually a part of this camp according to Melton. The City is just providing equipment, personnel, and press for the "Mayor's Youth Camp" at Frank Melton's expense from all published accounts and press releases.

Is there no irony here? Didn't Melton's son need/want his father at home in Texas? Why is it just about other people's kids? Knowledge gained during the outing has reinforced what Melton and the City Council have discussed recently — the lack of fathers in families, he said. "Out of 51 only two had their biological fathers at home," Melton said. "The kids have been very respectful. They have been brutally honest. There are certain things I can tell the community. There are some things I'll take to my grave. But there are real issues."

Did anyone notice he recently stated he had a degree in "physical instruction" or some such? I thought I saw him, on TV, in a courtroom swear that his degree was in social work. What's up with this?

Melton's degree has never been crystal-clear to me. I've heard a number of different versions. And he did tell me that he wrote a these on Buford "Walking Tall" Pusser. So there's that.

Well, the POT here is certainly calling the KETTLE black. Melton was an "absent father." How could he possible say anything about a father not being in the home? Why would any MAN give up his own kids to "father" someone else's. melton initially said that he was a Socail Worker. When asked for his license/certification, he dropped this title like a hot potato. Next, he claimed to have a degree in journalism. Now, his latest thing is having a degree in Physical Education. This claim was made secondary to the fact that he said he was "qualified to run (ruin) the Division of Parks and Recreation." melton keeps pushing the envelope and someone, somewhere, sometime, someway, will discover who the "REAL" frank melton IS.

I vaguely remember this, but years ago when I was in my high school's ROTC program, Frank gave a speech and I could've sworn he said he had a degree in journalism or communications and he said that he had worked as a reporter in Texas. Had I know what this man would turn out to be, I would've saved that program.

If I'm not mistaken, it was around the time when he was trying to get the Texas businessman involved in the King Edward Hotel project. I even remember it repored that he said he owned two planes, but he backed off of that when he was questioned about it. Does anybody else remember?

You JFP people amaze me. I bet all y'all are working class or poor people. Don't y'all know that when you're rich you can hire people to be fathers for your children? That way, you can be fathers to others. Don't y'all see rich people with maids, chauffeurs, dog-walkers, cat-attendants, yard peoples, et al. We may not ever get a good mayor again if y'all don't leave the man along. PPPPLLLEEEAAASSSEEE.

I wasn't talking about the staff. I was talking about us bloggers. I guess it can apply to the staff too though. I just don't want to blow a good thang with our mayor. Good mayors and few and far between. What kind of man would forsake other love ones just for us? Only a good mayor would.

Just saw in the CL that they are reporting that Frank is paying for his summer camp. Does that include all salaries of the city police and city employees who have been participating, including Goldia? Just wondered if they are all taking vacation days or if Frank has figured out the hourly wages they would be making on city time and has made arrangements to pay them personally for the hours they work. If not, I'm sure that the city would be happy for him to reimburse us on Monday. Rainbow
