Regardless of the outcome today, it looks like Haley Barbour is worried. Just got this e-mail from a source:
A member of the Rankin County Democratic Executive Committee just called me to report that she received a robocall from Governor Haley Barbour a few minutes ago in which the Governor warned that there was a HUGE Democratic turnout today and that they needed to go to the polls and vote or "conservatives like us" will be defeated.
We also got word that a fake ballot is being distributed in Yazoo that doesn't list the Democratic candidates for governor and lieutenant governor.

I think that's the "72 hour drill" that Sid Salter alluded to in his column.

It's doubtful that he's worried. I'm sure this was pre-planned. When you're spending as much money as Haley, there's very little left to chance.

Well, if he's not worried at all, then he's just arrogant. And I don't that as someone who purports to have any idea how this election is going to turn out. Fortune-telling is not in my job description.

Also, would it be honest to plan a robocall in advance that tells people that the Democratic turnout is high today and get out and vote?

No, I was there when his kids rolled out the big birthday cake for John Stennis years ago. But it seems some others have. Or didn't know in the first place. :-( BTW, I saw some of his kids down from Tennessee to campaign last night. Outside agitators, it would seem, now drive Mercedes SUVs.

This is also a statement coming from a Democratic Committe Member. Seems like just normal he said she said politics with no actual proof!

ha, I was a kid once! thats the good old days. Surely Republicans are are not the only techno-adept to use robocalls and to actually plan for them. Its all part the gamebook for winning elections. I do believe Dick Morris and James Carville have access to the same tactics.

There must be a study somewhere that says those calls work. I'm baffled. Maybe I should do a robo-call asking people to send checks to my P.O. Box?

I love all the "the other guys do it, too" answers you get when you call people out for something—as if that justifies a damn thing. Britt, this isn't a partisan slam. It's a slam against ugly, stupid politics regardless of who does them. And if we could ever get past all the partisan excuse-making that's become a national pasttime in this country, maybe we could get somewhere and get many more voters over the apathetic hump. I do believe.

BTW, I think they "work" because they make so many people stay home. And guess who that benefits?

That I can understand. But the point of this particular call was apparently to motivate Republican voters to go to the polls.

Ms Ladd you are pretty graceful for a koolaide consumer... (just kidding). I dont think anyone benefits when people stay home. I thought the idea of the robocalls was to get the vote out, not keep it at home. I think thats what you reported the Gov. was asking people to do. Do you imply that only non-conservatives should get out and vote? Do you not think that somewhere today someone was trying to get liberals to get out and vote, maybe even using robocalls? Not sure who they would use to galvanize the democratic base? I am sure its going on though. If not, then someone is not using all the tools in the toolbox to win the election.

I feel like I am nitpicking, but I think its a smart thing for Republicans to call other Republicans to get them to go vote. I dont think the Repubs have the market cornered on doing that, and if they do, perhaps the dems need to spend more time researching campaign technology, and tactic.

Do you imply that only non-conservatives should get out and vote? Eh? No. The point is, and was, that it is dishonest to plan ahead to use a robocall that acts like it was thrown together in desperation to get people out, regardless to who does it. Of course, Barbour also wrote his Neshoba County Fair speech the day before he made it and commented on remarks that Eaves hasn't even heard yet! That's how machine politics work. And they do not appeal to the masses and the independent-minded, so to speak. This kind of politics make them apathetic. That why it's really stupid when the party that needs "the people" to vote the most do the same thing. It's really cute and silly, by the way, to try to turn me into a partisan who only criticizes Republicans. You ought to do a bit o' archive-surfing first. ;-)

No, the Dems need to spend more time talking about issues that matter to real people, including those who are disgusted with politics, rather than investing in robocalling and immigrant-bashing.

well sorry I didnt archive surf first, and I am only making a point on the current thread, I could go on and on about other things in your publication, but you have a right to publish it and I have the right to laugh at it at times. No NRA member is forcing me to read this, I enjoy it, and I do admire yours and other's passion for your cause. Not that I am deluded that I am going to start the next revolution here, or even make any new friends.

You can laugh at it all you want; just don't try to turn me into someone I'm not. That gets really tiresome, and it doesn't lead to more intelligent discussion. I don't even know what you mean about an NRA member forcing you ... to read ... but I did just have this funny vision of Cliff standing over some dude at a computer screen ... never mind ... Why wouldn't you make new friends here? There are people from all across the political spectrum, and there are a few enemies from the left and the right, too. In fact, I just got an e-mail from an anonymous leftie that I suspended for violating the User Agreement, and then again for sneaking back in, who is threatening to tell all these people that we both know that I ... get this ... BAN PEOPLE FROM THE SITE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. Oh, and I have "disappointed" this person by pulling my endorsement of David Blount for his anti-immigrant rhetoric and for being arrogant and for putting out a "leaden" newspaper and for being an all-around bad girl (the last one was my summary). All this said while hiding behind a fake name. ;-) "Put your left foot in, take your right foot out ... " Oh, the dance of partisanship. Play nice and be respectful of others, and you can disagree all you want, Britt. Condescending jerks come in all flavors, and the JFP is no one's lapdoggie.

Actually, it is immigrant-bashing when it's based on bad facts and rhetoric, but I'm not going to repeat all that again. We have at least two threads going on it now; head over there and catch up on other views on this issue (I'm not going to repeat myself), and don't go off-thread here: http://www.jacksonfreepress.com/comments.php?id=15342_0_67_0_C http://www.jacksonfreepress.com/comments.php?id=15337_0_67_0_C

Nooooo ... Cliff is my favorite NRA friend, and my partner in blog crime. You really do need to catch up! You know the rules of netiquette, right—that you hang out on a site and figure out the dynamics before posting? You're way off base here with your assumptions about who we are. Now, if you weren't making any assumptions and just talking about the issues, it wouldn't matter. Capice?

I am a bit confused here. Isn't robocalling the same as telemarketing? We got one of those calls around 2:45 this afternoon from HB.

GLewis, true, however it was at my parent's house the call came in to. My parents don't have a machine to catch calls. My Mother was not feeling well and needed some rest and I was not near the phone to catch it before it woke her up. She is 86. I think those kind of calls are obnoxious.

Ms Ladd, I do apoligize for any faux pax I committed. No disrespect intended, and since I am not a NRA member I dont guess I know that Cliff. I am still wondering if I logged on the supertalk ms blog or something similar thats more right leaning; is there someone is complaining about calls from john thou art, jr. calling and saying there will be no more prayer or bibles sold in Miss. if the Godless Republican Horde runs rampant. Sorry if I sound condesending but they were passing out red meat and Red koolaide earlier and I didnt want to be rude and not fellowship. Just hope you feel the same way when hillary or barak or john edwards robocall you next year. Thats my only point. Peace, out!!
