John Reeves Plans to Contest Loss

The Clarion-Ledger is reporting that Rep. John Reeves is alleging voter irregularities and plans to contest his loss to attorney Adrienne Wooten. (Also note that next to that story, the Ledger has declared Reeves the winner.)

donna did I miss where the Clarion-Ledger named Reeves the winner???? In the article they say Wooten apparently won...to the left of the story, the numbers reflect that she won.... What am I missing?

Perhaps, because in the Clarion Ledger in the left column, Reeves is placed above Wooten (although her numbers clearly show she is the victor)--suggests that Reeves is the winner. All the others are placed appropriately. See below. AT A GLANCE Vote totals District 27 Smith (D)* 3,913 Gill (R) 1,823 29 of 29 precincts reporting District 61 Rogers (R)* 4,664 Downing (D) 1,168 13 of 13 precincts reporting District 62 Weathersby (R)* 6,193 Giles (ind.) 1,231 17 of 17 precincts reporting District 66 Brown (D)* 3,137 Wilson (R) 1,684 17 of 17 precincts reporting District 71 Reeves (R)* 1,436 Wooten (D) 1,672 16 of 16 precincts reporting District 73 Ellington (R)* 5,153 Lavine (D) 2,969 *incumbent 13 of 13 precincts reporting

Rep. John Reeves is a very good friend to the City of Jackson and I hate to see him go. He is the senior member of the Hinds County Delegation.

I suspect the last 2 weeks of Democrat campaign ads, particularly the radio ads with Bennie Thompson, sealed Reeves' defeat.

blu Thats because all of the winners are the incumbents...and the incumbents are listed first in each race.....this is the way they posted it first thing this morning, nothing has changed!

It was interesting watching an interview on WJTV last night with both Reeves and Smith. Reeves was very professional about it all and said, look, voters at certain precincts couldn't vote for me so they voted for the other candidate. They should be given the opportunity. Ethically, I agree. Smith on the other hand said "Voters have made a choice and I am that choice." Not very professional of her, if there was a voting problem, you know?

PuckInJxn, please help me understand your rational: Smith on the other hand said "Voters have made a choice and I am that choice." Not very professional of her, if there was a voting problem, you know?" What is the determining factor in making what she said "unprofessional." According to the count, Smith is the winner and had absolutely nothing to do with "voting problems." Is it a fact that there were actual problems or is this Reeves position of disbelief that he lost after so many years in office? Just asking.

By the way, who is Smith? I thought that Reeves' opponent was a female attorney from Canton whose name is Wooten.

The Clarion is reporting that a re-vote in the four contested precincts is scheduled for December 18. This should be interesting. Reeves faces an uphill battle as a white Republican trying to hold on to a seat from a district that is now majority black and Democrat. Even if he prevails this time, he's probably toast in the next election 4 yrs from now.
