Just when you thought that the past was another half-mile behind us, something like this comes to light. The Associated Press reported:
Earl Faggert, the leader of a heritage group that fought to keep a Confederate emblem on the Mississippi flag, is now on the payroll of Gov. Haley Barbour's re-election campaign.
And Barbour's finance records list Faggert's mailing address as 2244 Beach Boulevard in Biloxi. That's the address of Beauvoir, the last home of Confederate president Jefferson Davis.
In separate interviews, Barbour, Faggert and a Beauvoir official told The Associated Press they don't know why the records would show the address of the historic home, which — like most beachfront structures in Mississippi — was battered by Hurricane Katrina. Faggert lives in the central Mississippi town of Heidelberg.

Why is this news? That's nothing. I'm from SC, a state that, after people protested the flying of the Conf flag on top of the state house, decided to take it down, put it right in front of the capitol building and shine a 24-hour spotlight on it to make it even more visible (and show who's boss). Of course he's gonna be on the side that voted 2-to-1 to keep the Conf symbol in the MS state flag. It's politics, which is 90% association.

Donna-- You need to remember your Faulkner. The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past. For what it's worth, Faggert is considered to be a moderate among heritage people. Here's something from the October 2, 2005 Atlanta Constitution: Earl Faggert, of Heidelberg, Miss., a past SCV commander, said he is leaving the group after 35 years. He said he has been attacked by activists as elitist, but he said that charge is a screen to obscure his opponent's plans to funnel SCV money to groups opposed to the U.S. government. "The neo-secessionists, anarcho-extremists, whatever you want to call them, they put the elitist label on anyone who disagrees with them," Faggert said. "If being a loyal American means being an elitist, then go ahead and label me one." Check out the the research the Southern Poverty Law Center has on the SCV.
