Resolved: A Toxin-Free 2009

Everyone has a start on their New Year's resolutions, right? A lot of folks will be adding "Be More Green" to their lists this year, and here's a corollary to that one: "Get Rid of Toxins."

Toxins? You bet! Indoor air is usually more polluted that outdoor air, the EPA reports, and because we spend most of our time indoors (especially during the winter), getting a handle on indoor toxins can make a big difference in our well-being.

The How Stuff Works Web site put together their top ten list of indoor toxins, telling why they're dangerous, how to use them safely if you must, and what to use instead if alternatives exist. Counting down, here's the list:

10. Moth Balls
9. Pesticides
8. Pressed-Wood Products
7. Chemicals in Carpet
6. Laser-Printer Chemicals
5. Lead Paint
4. Air Fresheners and Cleaning Solutions
3. Baby Bottles with BPA
2. Flame Retardants (in mattresses, furniture, TVs, computers, etc.)
1. Cosmetic Phthalates (in shampoos, hair spray, fragrances, etc.)

Read the whole story for all of the details. Some of the toxins are fairly easy to eliminate and some are tougher (and more expensive), but aiming to be toxin-free this coming year will pay off in spades with better health for you and your family.
