College Baseball: The Polk Backlash

Former Mississippi State baseball coach Ron Polk has cooled off a little, but he's still pissed. Polk, who resigned last month after 29 seasons as the top Dog of MSU baseball, went into a rage last week when State hired John Cohen, one of his former players, as State's new coach. Polk wanted Tommy Raffo, another former MSU player and Polk's longtime assistant, to get the job. New AD Greg Byrne declined to let Polk keep running the program and made his own decision. Polk said he wanted MSU to take his name off of the baseball stadium.

Apparently, Polk grossly overestimated his support among MSU supporters. He has been ridiculed by both fans and the press for his temper tantrum. If he doesn't want his name on the stadium, here's a chisel, one writer said. Polk softened his stance on Monday, saying he wasn't mad at Cohen, just Byrne. Give credit to Cohen and Byrne for not getting down in the mud with the old man.
