Spend the Day With Dad

Let's be honest: Dads kick ass. Who else could teach us the ways of the world (or at least those involving pyrotechnics, bikes, cards and fishing lures) so deftly and with such ease? I don't know about your dad, but without mine, I may have never known the joys of duct tape (like how it's currently holding together my couch), learned how to mow the lawn in that nice cross-hatched pattern or how to fix a sandwich with whatever five ingredients happen to be left in the refrigerator.

Morning Glory
Most dads can count with few fingers how many times they've been served breakfast in bed. Give him a reason to hit snooze one more time, and make him a breakfast he'll remember for years. Try omelets and fresh orange juice, or some home-baked muffins with his favorite coffee. Can't get into the house before he's up? Take him out to one of his favorite greasy-spoon diners for the full meal deal instead.

Afternoon Adventures
Whether your dad has a penchant for sports, outdoors activities, music, movies or gaming, there are 1,001 options for an afternoon together. Go canoeing on the Pearl, fishing or hiking along the trails at the Reservoir; cheer on the M-Braves or shoot some hoops; catch a matinee showing of the film he's been dying to see or go to an afternoon concert; set up a chess tournament or round of poker. And don't forget to put together a picnic lunch, pack movie snacks or set out a spread of guy-friendly game fair.

Night Cap
What would Father's Day be without dinner? Do what all men secretly wish they could every night of the week, and fire up the grill. Simplicity is key: skewer steak, chicken, pork or fish with a mix of his favorite veggies (or go completely green if you and/or your dad are vegetarian). Baste the skewer with some tasty marinade, and you're on your way to heaven on a plate. Add a local microbrew, and he might just reach beervana - the perfect finish to your day with dad!

Dodgy situations, be damned! In case of emergency, just ask, "What would Dad do?" Then pull out your pocketknife, and all will be right with the world.

Simply put, dads know how to survive—and that's just one of the reasons I can't live without mine. If you're lucky enough to have yours around on Father's Day, kidnap him for a few hours (heck, why not the whole day?) and show him some appreciation for all the fine skills he's imparted on you over the years.
