Will it still be called the "White House?" | Jackson Free Press | Jackson, MS

Will it still be called the "White House?"

If you are interested in how bad things will get, this is a pretty good indication.

The national news media is not really covering this story, but at the recent Texas GOP convention a vendor sold racist buttons with the quote "If Obama wins, will it still be called the "White House?"

This is also an indication of why minorities don't go to the GOP - after all, the vendor had to pay $1500 to be a vendor, so he obviously expected to sell enough of those racist buttons to cover his expenses!

What do you think?

Its also important to know that the Texas GOP has cut off the vendor and apologized.

Within the story: "I'm not crazy," Alcox said. "Why would I go out there and purposely put a button out there that's going to offend people?" Because you're crazy. And.... Alcox said he could yet vote for Obama over U.S. Sen. John McCain, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee. "I haven't made up my mind," he said. Reminds of me of the "Some of my best friends are black" card some people play whenever they find themselves caught saying offensive statements about black people.

I saw a picture of the button a few days ago, and I didn't want to talk about it or deal with it because I was afraid that I would get angrier than I already was. Lately, I've found myself dealing with a lot of the issues related to the campaign that way. It's been almost 1 1/2 years, and we still have five months to go, so I'm trying to take it easy and keep my cool. I've been trying to limit how much political news I read or watch in order to keep my sanity because this campaign has been incredibly nasty. Just as long as we can have fried chicken and watermelon for state dinners (I am African American and this is a joke!) Yes...and a basketball court installed on the front lawn, rap music blasting from the back patio, and all the Presidential limos tricked out with 22" wheels, gold-plated rims and neon lights underneath. I guess these are a few of the things some white folks are expecting to see happen if the White House goes black.

"McCain says I NEVER LOVED AMERICA..." Wrong. The exact quote was "I really didn't love America until I was deprived of her company." That's not saying he never loved America. It's more like saying "I never appreciated having a house and money to pay bills until I was unemployed and homeless" or "I never appreciated how good my marriage really was until we got separated". I read it to mean that he took America's freedoms for granted, like many of us do, until he was deprived of them for years as a P.O.W. This is partially why I dislike Dan Abrams. I know what he was trying to say, that the shots taken at Michelle's words were unwarranted and overblown (I agree, since she never said she didn't love America either) but you can't equate these two statements. I'm more in the mindset of what Kaze said a few weeks ago, that we should rise above the petty attacks on the candidates and their spouses, and concentrate on the issues.

You are wrong Jeff; there is more than one quote. There is another quote I saw and heard where he did say I "never loved America" ... blah blah blah..."until I was deprived of her company". It IS the same thing they are trying to demonize MO for. Most objective people can see that. They are both being taken out of context. If you can't see it, at least a nice Republican lady like Laura Bush gets it. In both cases it is wrong.

When I can find him quoted as actually using those words, and the full context, I'll concede the point. If you see them, please provide a link. But in the broader sense we actually agree as to how statements can be taken out of context, ala Michelle Obama's comment and your phrasing of McCain's comment. Michelle didn't say anything bad. The dust up over Michelle's comment was a smokescreen to call her (and by extension Barack) unpatriotic and create a smear campaign around her.

Yep. And as I've said elsewhere, I think I understand exactly what Michelle was saying, and to some extent why she would use those words in expressing it. Once she started speaking on the campaign trail her words were open to scrutiny. But it was disgusting the way she was demonized as someone who "hates" America, which is not what she said but what other people "heard".

Iron is good people, Whitley. He's somewhere in America praying with other republicans that a terrorist group does something soon to Americans so the republican party can go on a killing spree and get 4 more years on the premise they are hard on terrorists. I see no credible evidence that they're stopping terrorists, but I'm convinced their policies, here and abroad, are creating terrorists against us.

We were just having fun with Iron. We didn't cry foul when people attacked us unjustly for years. I guess it's the "just" attacks on republicans they can't handle. I'm sorry, but I can't make up anything worse or that is better evidnce of a party gone wild or foul than the true facts about republicans. Otherwise, I would make up stuff like the republicans did and still do about us. I didn't even get mad when Harry, probably not a republican either if you let him tell it, called me a lunatic. I happen to know what a lunatic is, and know I'm not one, and know who indeed is one. Republicans berated us Democrats for years with bullcrap and make-believe, and I personally fought back with facts. I don't recall getting mad or crying the blues. I apologize to Lady if she thought I was personally and inappropriately attacking her husband, but not Iron as all is fair between us, and we were discussing politics, a dirty game often requiring dirty tactics to win.

The love is so clear by how much of America they have made deals with corporations or the wealthy to buy up, steal, drill for oil/gas on or simply take or hide for later nefarious use. If we don't get them out of office soon there won't likely be much of America they haven't sold to the rich or personally purchased thereby creating another reservation. And it won't small or merely Native Americans or Indians this time, but peasants of all hues and poor walks of life.

Ralph Nader link "There's only one thing different about Barack Obama when it comes to being a Democratic presidential candidate. He's half African-American," Nader said. "Whether that will make any difference, I don't know. I haven't heard him have a strong crackdown on economic exploitation in the ghettos. Payday loans, predatory lending, asbestos, lead. What's keeping him from doing that? Is it because he wants to talk white? He doesn't want to appear like Jesse Jackson?" When asked if Obama does try to "talk white," Nader replied, "Of course." He also said that Obama doesn't want to appear to be "another politically threatening African-American politician." "He wants to appeal to white guilt," Nader said. "You appeal to white guilt not by coming on as black is beautiful, black is powerful. Basically he's coming on as someone who is not going to threaten the white power structure, whether it's corporate or whether it's simply oligarchic. And they love it. Whites just eat it up." Hate groups link Since Obama defeated Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary last month, clinched the Democratic presidential nomination and could become America's first black president in November, racist groups, white supremacy organizations, neo-nazis and skinheads have all increased their activity on the Internet and stepped up their hateful online denunciations of Obama. It's a hate experts say is now reaching a fever pitch. "I haven't seen this much anger in a long, long time," Billy Roper, a 36-year-old who runs a group called White Revolution in Russellville, Arkansas, told The Washington Post. "Nothing has awakened normally complacent white Americans more than the prospect of America having an overtly non-white president."

More on the hate groups: The resurgence of hate groups comes as a new poll by The Washington Post-ABC News shows that nearly half of all Americans say race relations in the country are in bad shape and three in 10 acknowledge feelings of racial prejudice. "Many think Obama has the potential to transform current racial politics. Nearly six in 10 believe his candidacy will shake up the racial status quo, for better or worse. And by nearly three to one, those who think Obama's candidacy will affect race relations said it will have a positive impact," the newspaper reported. "African-Americans are much more optimistic than whites on this score: Sixty percent said Obama's candidacy will do more to help race relations, compared with 38 percent of whites. Two-thirds of those supporting him for president think it will improve the situation," the poll showed. "For black voters," Kirby said, " it allows us to take a good look at how far we have come -- and how far we yet have to travel."

You see, Whitley, I think the fellow is simply saying he prefers blacks or African-Americans, the stronger version of the old negro. He may not be dissing negroes, african-americans or blacks generally or purposely. Imus has taught me that words can have dual or other meanings. Can some of our white friends on here tell us what you prefer us to sound like. If Barack, smart, black, white, mixed, articilate, confident, well-educated, good at writing, arithematic and talking; isn't good enough to please the judicious, discerning and perfecting taste of white America then I guess we need to run Alan "Super Tom" Keyes the next time.

On NPR, I heard a old sounding white dude in Unity, New Hampshire saying of Barack, "He is a good speaker. He speaks like Martin Luther King. He rants like a negro and I don't like that." - Whitley Whitley, New Hampshire is...well...in all of recorded history only three black people have ever lived in New Hampshire...my uncle Bob, one anonymous, and the third is the overnight guest in my house tonight. ------------------------------------------------- "Can some of our white friends on here tell us what you prefer us to sound like." - Walt Walt, it's important to keep in mind that many (but not all) white people, like many purebreds, are high strung, nervous and easily frightened types. They (but not all) tend to be allergic to the color brown. Being white means being right, and never having to say you're sorry. So they prefer that you make like the sound of one hand clapping. Not trying to be controversial or offend anyone, just hoping to educate and inform.
