On Saturday morning, I got up at 4:30 AM to help my mom prepare for a garage sale that was to start at 6 AM. She decided to have it at my younger sister's house because she gets good traffic there when she has a garage sale, so we had to go to the other side of town, set up the tables and put out the signs. I grabbed the signs that I made the night before, which I stapeled to wodden stakes, and hammered the signs into the ground at the neighborhood entrances.
After about four hours, we noticed that we didn't get many customers and couldn't understand why. Eventually, a woman came by and told us that a man yanked up our signs, tore them up, threw the remains into the back of his truck and drove away. My mom and I were astounded and angry at this senseless act. Later, a neighbor came by and told us that the same thing happened to her, and this guy does it all the time. He even called the sheriff's department on a guy who hung up a sign advertising his lawn care service and accused him of operating a commercial business in a residential neighborhood. Knowing that we were licked, we packed up our wares and went home two hours early. My mom told my sister what happened, and she said that she knows who the guy is and that he exhibits the same behavior at flea markets.
Well, my mom will not have any more garage sales in that neighborhood. She'll be at her church from now on. In addition, one of the members of the neighborhood association will be writing an article on the thief's shenanigans. Why does he steal signs? Does he have a business and doesn't want any competition? Does he think all signs ar ugly? Is he misunderstanding a city ordinance? Whatever the reason is, his behavior is petty, despicable and uncalled for. In a nutshell, this overzealous sign vigilante needs to get. a. life.
