Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Republican and a lead of the John McCain campaign, was standing next to Spin Row (the area where all the press is, according to a sign sticking on a tree). I asked him who he thinks will win the election. He says, "Well, I know who I want to win the election." I said, "Well, do you think you (guys) will win the election?"
He answered: "I think we got a very good chance. I think the more people evaluate who's best in terms of economics and national security, considering John's bipartisanship and his willingness to take on his own party, that he's going to win out. Obama's got a lot of talent, a bright future, but I'm not sure 2009 is the best time to put him in as commander-in-chief."
I threw back at him: "Some would argue that the economy has been in the hands of a Republican executive branch for eight years, and the damn thing tanked. Why should we give it to the Republicans for another four years?"
His reply: "Well, it's been a Democratic Congress for a while...."
I interrupted him. "Well, only for two years."
"Yeah, but all I can say is, what happened to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is a blight on all our houses. The source of this is out-of-control lobbying and unregulated private enterprise. And if you had to go in and pick someone to clean up corruption, I would argue that McCain has got more guts than anyone else has."
Before I could ask him how McCain's campaign manager Rick Davis plays into that clean-up, Sen. Lindsey Graham was saved by the confines of the Music Building, which isn't admitting reporters.
