Beginning today at 1 p.m., visitors to the Jackson Zoo will be able to see its newest addition, a male chimpanzee named MoJo, born March 8. Mojo has been indoors with his mother, Missy, since his birth.
Zoo keepers created the name MoJo by combining his father's name, JoJo, with his mother's name, according to a release. He joins eight other chimps at the Zoo, representing three generations. At 4 weeks old, Mojo is the youngest, while his daddy JoJo, at 45, is the oldest. Missy is 29. The other chimps are Judy, 41, Jeanette, 40, Belle, 34, Jackson, 31, MaeBelle, 20, and Binti, 10.
"This is such a special birth," said Zoo Director Beth Poff in the release. "It has been some time since we have had a chimp born at the Jackson Zoo, and they always inspire such fascination and joy among visitors."
MoJo, like other animals at the zoo, is available for adoption, which helps provide support for the animals all year long. For more information on chimpanzees and adoption, visit the Jackson Zoo Web site or call 601-352-2580 x 226.
