The Southern Circuit Film Series closes its 2008-2009 run with this powerful documentary from director Rachel Goslins. "Bama Girl" follows Jessica Thomas, a black student at the University of Alabama seeking to become homecoming queen. Not only is she fighting the traditional southern discriminators of privilege and old money, but also "The Machine," a group of all-white fraternities who have controlled school politics and elections at the university for decades. The documentary promises to offer insight into racial dynamics in the South—between blacks and whites, but also internal race relations. A Q&A will follow the screening; Goslins will be in attendance. Call 601-974-1755 for more info.
