Jackson police reported 238 major crimes last week, according to statistics (PDF) released this morning at a Jackson Police Department command staff meeting. Last week's total represents a 10 percent increase over the previous week, but a 17 percent decrease from the same period last year.
Northeast Jackson's Precinct 4 reported 58 total crimes, the fewest of any precinct in the city. This year to date, Precinct 4 has seen a 16 percent reduction in major crimes from the previous year. Precinct 2, which covers the city's western and central sections, has also reported a slight decrease in crime as compared to last year, with violent crime decreasing 23 percent and property crime increasing slightly due to a spike in auto burglaries.
Precinct 1, which covers South Jackson, reported 59 crimes last week. For the year, Precinct 1 is 5 percent above its crime totals for last year. Northwest Jackson's Precinct 3 is also slightly above its yearly totals from the previous year. Violent crime has stayed level in Precinct 3, but property crime is 13 percent above last year's figure.
