After 126 years, Belhaven College, a private Christian liberal arts school in the heart of Jackson, is changing its name to Belhaven University. The school's president, Dr. Roger Parrott, will announce the change at an all-campus gathering today at 11:45 a.m.
The announcement event, held at the Belhaven Center for the Arts (835 Riverside Drive) includes a "green and gold" balloon release and attendees will receive a free T-shirt.

Technically, MC could claim to be a University. As I heard it, however, naming the resulting institution of higher learning would be problematic. I guess it's congratulations to BU then?

You probably heard right. MC is definitely a university according to SACS (the regional accreditor)--it's actually Level V (authorized to offer up to 3 doctoral degrees), where Belhaven and Millsaps are Level III (authorized for master's degrees but not doctorates)--but didn't change its name because Mississippi University would overlap with the University of Mississippi and confuse people. Belhaven University rolls off the tongue nicely! Millsaps could also legitimately claim to be a university; they have the same level of accreditation, and both Belhaven and Millsaps offer 3 or more master's programs. What are the ministry programs Belhaven is adding? Anybody know? And I know somebody (not me) who MIGHT be interested in the arts administration program if it's an MBA...
