In a surprise performance capped by 81 total points scored, Ole Miss rolled over Texas Tech in part due to big plays on defense, including an interception returned for a touchdown and a safety against Tech.
Ole Miss finished 9-5 under first-year coach Houston Nutt and should finish in the Top 15 in the national polls. Texas Tech finished its season 11-2 and was ranked No. 2 in the nation after slipping past then-No. 1 Texas 39-33 on Nov. 1 in Lubbock.

I despise Ole Miss with a passion. That said, I'll give credit were credit is due. The Rebels had a surprisingly good year. Even in their four losses, they were in every game, including the Alabama game, where they were down 24-0 at halftime, only to come up short in a valiant effort in the second half, in which they outscored the Tide 20-0. Houston Nutt would be a very close second in my SEC coach of the year vote (first goes to Bobby Johnson at Vanderbilt. Guiding a team to their first winning season and first bowl game since 1982 counts for a whole lot.).
