Ward 1 Councilman Jeff Weill plans to raise the possibility of suing Mayor Frank Melton to release tax forms at the Council's work session this afternoon. The Council asked Melton on Jan. 5 to provide 1099 tax forms that would reveal how much the city pays contractors and other non-employees.
Melton refused to hand the records over, arguing that they would divulge Social Security Numbers and other personal information.
The Council has asked Attorney General Jim Hood's office whether Melton could veto a decision to sue the city. Weill said today that the Council has not yet received a response from the AG's office.

It's becoming a sad day when city officials have to even consider suing the mayor in order for him to release information. I can understand the part about Social Security numbers, but I do believe that can be blacked out while releasing the other relevant information.

What's sad is that it has taken them this long to even entertain the idea.....now, that's sad!
