Since 1900, 16 hurricanes have hit the Mississippi coast, nine of them category 3, 4 or 5, making them "major" storms. That means that of the 40 total Gulf hurricanes during that time span, 40 percent have hit the Magnolia State, according to Examiner.com.
Only one category 5 storm has ever hit the state's coast, Hurricane Camille in August of 1969. Hurricane Katrina, in August 2005, was a category 4 storm. Those two hurricanes were two of the three most devastating tropical systems to hit the Gulf Coast in the past 105 years.
Forecasters predict a slightly lower-than-average season this year.
