Major crimes in Jackson dropped by almost 9 percent last week, according to a weekly report (PDF) released at yesterday's command staff meeting for the Jackson Police Department. The city saw a decrease in property crime from 212 the previous week to 185, while violent crimes increased from 27 to 33.
Precinct 4, in Northeast Jackson, saw the greatest decrease in major crimes, from 68 to 46, largely on the strength of reductions in auto burglaries and auto thefts. Precincts 1 and 3, in South and Northwest Jackson, respectively, both saw slight percentage increases for major crimes, but both had crime numbers in single digits for all categories except house burglaries.
Also at yesterday's meeting, the JPD's Investigations Division reported the arrest of Daniel Nelson on 2 counts of aggravated assault and 2 counts of robbery. Nelson is a suspect in a June 16 assault on a security guard at Hamp's nightclub and a June 16 robbery of a convenience store on Medgar Evers Boulevard.

If you have them, how are the year-to-year stats looking? And is there any talk of Johnson restoring ComStat? That was a great tool for tracking crime that has been used successfully in communities across the country. Melton, in his infinite crime-fighting wisdom, destroyed the program and replaced it with--um, what did he replace it with again?
