In effort to clear thousands of outstanding warrants, the City of Jackson will waive penalties on overdue fines for two days, city officials announced today. The initiative, called "Amnesty Days," covers traffic violations and all misdemeanors except those involving domestic violence, weapons, crimes against a person and driving under the influence.
Amnesty Days will extend from June 18 to June 19. The Jackson Police Department will relax its fine collection operations during that time, interim Chief of Police Tyrone Lewis said.
"This is an opportunity for individuals who owe fines to get a second chance, to get a fresh start to avoid jail time or additional penalties and fines," Lewis said. "It's also an opportunity for individuals to get their situations squared away, so they aren't running or hiding from law enforcement when our officers show up at their door."
The city last held an amnesty period in 2006, during which time it collected more than $270,000 from over 2,000 people, according to Judge Gail Lowery, the city's deputy director of court services.
