• Free
Since 1965, African Americans have celebrated June 19 as the emancipation of slaves. Originating in Galveston, Texas, when Union soldiers arrived in the city to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, the day is an outpouring of joy in the black community and emphasizes community and celebration of freedom. This year's local celebration has a lineup of community activists and artists including the illustrious Poet of Truth, PyInfamous, up-and-coming Blacdadi Strahberries, Love City Players and others. There will also be a Capoeira demonstration. Activities will run through 4 p.m. E-mail [e-mail missing].
