Jackson State University is set to have its first female president. The Board of Trustees for Mississippi's universities voted this afternoon to finalize its appointment of Dr. Carolyn Meyers as JSU president.
Meyers, the former president of Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Va., spent today in listening sessions with faculty, administrators, staff, students and community members. She is expected to take over duties from JSU Interim President Leslie McLemore in January. Former President Ronald Mason resigned in May to take over the presidency of Southern University in Baton Rouge, La.
McLemore said he would return to his duties as director of JSU's Fannie Lou Hamer National Institute on Citizenship and Democracy. He hailed Meyers' appointment as an essential step for JSU to progress.
"I think it's good news for Jackson State," McLemore said. "It's always important to have permanent, stable leadership in place. Dr. Meyers' coming to the helm of the university is going to provide that stability and visionary leadership that the university needs to have in place."
