Groundhog Punxsutawney Phil of weather-prediction fame came out of his Pennsylvania hole this morning to give the world bad news: we're in for six more weeks of winter. Phil, who traditionally peeks out Feb. 2 every year, saw his shadow, reports the Hattiesburg American.
Legend has it that hibernating animals come out on the Christian holiday of Candlemas. If the animals don't see their shadows, spring will arrive early. Of Phil's 113 consecutive predictionswhich have been 100 percent correct according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Inner Circlehe foretold of an early spring only 13 times. StormFax Weather Almanac, however, disputes Phil's accuracy, saying that only 39 percent his predictions are correct.
