Located on the corner of Gallatin and West Capitol street, Dreamz Jxn is a three-story club and entertainment complex in downtown Jackson. Inside the club are sophisticated features that include 25 plasma screens, VIP rooms, three bars and three dance floors.
Since the grand opening of Dreamz last April, the club has gained a following of people dedicated to the attendance of parties and events. Recently the club hired new management to target a wider population.
Martin White, 27, became Dreamz manager this month and says he is focusing on creating more events for the venue. Some of the events already on the calendar include "Workplay Mondays," a mixer for young professionals, and "Centric Thursdays," a night of hip hop and neo-soul hits. On Thursdays and Fridays admission is $5, and for ladies entrance and drinks are free before 11 p.m. Saturdays are currently reserved for private events.
"Since we've gotten started, there has been a whole new audience, and it's been a chain reaction," White says.
Dreamz is not only the latest club in Jackson, but it is also a part of a franchise, owned by Greenville, Miss., native Felix Murray. Dreamz has seven locations in cities throughout the country including Atlanta and Chicago.

Drummin, Dreamz is definitely a venue that welcomes everyone! As I'm sure all venues in Jackson are. The seperation is "implied" at some places but not at this one. You should come by the Monday networking event that goes on Mondays right after work. Last Monday there were white and Black, even Latino young/old professionals in there enjoying happy hour. Matt Allen and I enjoyed it thouroughly. I only like frequenting places where the crowd is diverse. On Fridays I saw a mixed crowd dancing and having a good time oblivious to whether or not they were "allowed" to come. Its a new day downtown Drummin and by reading this piece I don't think there was ANYTHING in this article that implies that. Everyone White and Black go out and support these guys especially on Mondays. They are helping the rebirth downtown as well. Ill be there.

I did forget my meds, and JSU I want some Hennessy. I don't think I would feel too welcome at Freelon's if I went. I remember I was walking to my car on Farist Street one night, and a pimp (yes an actual one as represented by the line of hoes behind him) was like "White boy what you doing up in this hood?"

Drummin, you experience negativity from other people in any neighborhood you go too, especially if you don't meet the discription of the average person that frequents that area. I have an older model Honda with a Hinds plate and was visiting a friend which at the time lived in a gated community in Madison, needless to say a neighbor came over to check on my friend to see if she was alright, if she needed to call the police, if she was being held up. She wouldn't accept he reply that everything was fine so she called the police anyway. There is no color barrier, to my knowledge, at really any of the clubs in Jxn, with the exception of maybe one, as mentioned earlier. My mother is a dispatcher which handles alot of the night clubs security accounts, she knows Mr Freelon personally and does frequent his establishment. I have been a frequent at Freelons last year. I have clubs, pubs in areas of Jackson where seeing a white person is not on the average day to day basis and I might have been the only white person in there but it doesn't mean I wasn't welcome. I had people staring at me but still had fun and experience some of the best treatment and customer service by the establishment's staff. That doesn't say I wasn't welcome, it was just odd to them that I chose to came. Pick a club and go, black, white, red, blue, green it does not matter. Even if there aren't many members of your race there that particular time, does not mean you are not welcome. This is 2010 and lets move past this race barrier. This is probably one of the biggest issues that still hold Jackson down. Jackson has alot of places to have fun and shake a tailfeather. Forget the race issue, get out and have fun. Dreamz is definately mixed, recently Y101 had been out on Friday nights promoting the club and their marketing alone tells you that you are welcome. Again, race has no barrier and we need to move past that so that EVERYONE can enjoy what the city of soul has to offer.

Indeed Kenneth. I think at times Friday and Saturday nights are rumored to be more segregated than Sunday mornings. Partially because of outrageous propoganda like the story Drummin just told. I worked at th Advocate for years and frequented clubs there and there hasn't been a real "pimp" on that street in decades lol. But it sounds good because it fits a stereotype that people expect to hear about Black neighborhoods or downtown. Nice one lol. I suggest Drummin you come down to Dreamz and enjoy happy hour on Monday and see for yourself apparently the many white folks there felt very welcomed and I hear they're really reaching out to everyone.

Thank you for your inquires and overall interest in our club. All races and creeds are welcomed and encouraged to experience our venue! There are nights that may "appear" to be marketed towards one race, but we are working hard to let everyone know that they are welcomed and invited to come see us EVERY NIGHT. One of our 1st priorities, when we took over, was to make sure that the perception of Dreamz JXN was culturally diverse. The "norm" is definitely not what we want. We want you to come out, be comfortable in our club, have fun, and come back again. If you have any other questions and/or concerns please feel free to contact me @ [email protected] or calling me at 769-218-6992. If you have been to The New Dreamz JXN, please do not hesitate to provide us with feedback. Thank You, A. Martin White General Manager, The NEW Dreamz JXN.

Propaganda?! How dare you! Ok, here is what happened. I was walking out of Frank Jones at 4:00 am on a Saturday/Sunday and walking back to my car on Farish. This black fellow comes walking in my direction sort of out of the woods/brush by the abandoned buildings next to the bar. I was not scared, but on high alert. He was wearing an old school 80's Run DMC hat, a red shiny vest with no shirt on underneath, and what looked like goldish baggy pants. He had about 5 black women following behind him and he did make that statement to me. Ok, maybe this was not an actual "pimp" persay. I don't know if he actually rented these women out, or if he perhaps he was just quite the ladies man. But how else would you describe this individual, considering he was walking around Farish with no apparent establishment besides F. Jones in the vicinity, and I know he wasn't in there.

Yeah ok Drummin. Sure. "Out of the bushes" "Gold baggy pants" like a genie almost right? How did the other folks react when this uh...pimp came out? Anyway. Point is. You're welcomed to go anywhere u wish. Its TOTALLY up to you. You're safer coming anywhere downtown that say Baquan would be going to Pops that's for sure. Again come down and see for yourself. The droves of folks at F.Jones each weekend just proves the point. Next time you see a guy in gold baggy pants, red vest, and matching hat don't let him run off before you get your 3 wishes *wink*

Ok Kamikaze, we could debate whether this gentleman was a pimp or an eccentric mildly racist ladies man, but don't doubt the veracity of my story. That is insulting. You're calling me a liar. I can show you exactly where he was. It was on the corner of Farish and Hamilton. Maybe he wasn't a pimp, but I didn't like to be called out and told to leave the area because of my race. There was noone else around because I had to park a block away from F. Jones because it was packed, as most usually do. It was also 4:00 am. Considering I have seen prostitutes walking through that area at night on multiple occasions, both now and when it was Field's Cafe and the short-lived Mista Mista Magic (about which I have another strange story), why is it hard to believe I would see a pimp? Unless the prostitutes of Farish are self-employed/promoting 21st century businesswomen.

Ok, I may have to change my story. I just looked up Freelon's on the map, and it is located right behind where I saw my genie sighting, so I'm guessing this guy and his ladies were coming from Freelon's and parked far away and were walking back to their car. That still proves my point that my race impacted how Freelon's clubgoers would react to my presence.

We could debate on whether or not the guy was a pimp Drummin sure. But the get-up you described is a little clownish and sounds contrived based on out of date stereotypes. The same ones you read on the CL Blog. "White Boy what you doin in this hood" sounds like a line from a bad blaxploitation film. Who says that? LOL. Just sounds a tad far fetched is all. And AGAIN go where you wish Drummin. Go down to Dreamz during Monday's happy hour. From what I experienced you'll enjoy it. Go back to F.Jones. Visit Farish. You're welcome and wanted trust me. And if you're leary of being questioned about being white then perhaps It will give a small window into what SOME Black Folks have experienced when driving through Madison or going to the Dock back in the day.

I'm serious, he had on a vest with no shirt on underneath, and a rounded Run DMC hat. I may have added the pants later subconsciously. He did look clownish. I didn't think he was a pimp at first, but after I sobered up I decided he was because I had never seen anyone wearing an outfit like that. Like, if he was attending Def Comedy Jam, he would be the guy the comedian singled out and made fun of. A small window? Don't assume that because someone is white they haven't experienced small amounts of prejudice. I'm not saying I have been a victim of the black Klan, but there was racial tension at my integrated public school that occasionally erupted from both sides.

Noo baquan, I attend clubs downtown all the time. I haven't heard anything about Dreamz. I was just commenting that there is a lot of racial tension WHEREVER I go around here. Race is always in people's minds. Maybe not the black peoples, but definitely the white ones. When I lived in Indiana, there was a little, but not near the level it is here.

Drummin, when you say you experience racial tension wherever you go in Jackson, is it possible that maybe you're reading too much into something that probably isn't there? I, too, am white and go to many places in Jackson and I don't feel racial tension. Next time you're out and about you should try talking to people and try not to stare like you're clearly not from here. I mean if you want to speak racial tension, try riding in the car with a black male with a Hinds plate through Madison. I'm sorry, while I don't doubt your story, I have to say that the guy sounds like a 1980s Fresh Prince stereotype and probably is a bit far fetched. Definately questioning whether or not he was a pimp or just a guy leaving Freelons and automatically assuming he was a pimp, thats where the stereotype comes in. You don't know the guy and definately don't know enough about him to pass a judgement or label him and was not really necessary in this story. Goodluck Drummin and definately, find a venue you like and make it fun for you. Give Dreamz a shot. Again, despite you're feeling of racial tension, make Jackson yours and enjoy everything Jackson does have to offer. I refuse to go outside of the city to shop or seek entertainment, as I've mentioned, I am white and my philosophy is "if I can't get it in Jackson, then I don't need it." The city of Jackson is definately on the move, so take part in it, make it yours and have fun with it.............BTW Mr Martin White, I am definately glad to see Dreamz back open and I think what you guys do to market the venue is great. Keep up the awesome work, everytime I come, I have a blast. I definately tell other people about Dreamz and the fact that it caters to people of all backgrounds.

Drummin, your argument sounds like that same tit for tat reasoning that some folks use to stir up a back and forth with folks trying to move in a positive direction. It tickles me to hear white folks talk about how they dont like being singled out "because of their race" REALLY? I think youd have way less to NO problem going in dreamz. Much less than a Black man would have going in Electric Cowboy where they OPENLY sport a huge Dixie Flag. Or Pops where Ive heard they make no qualms with letting you know that spot is for good ole boys! But I dont hear any of the black kids that go to either and have fun say theyre scared to get lynched. Nothing is going to happen to you downtown or at Dreams or anywhere else you choose to go. Until you let down that invisible barrier you will always feel like an outcast.

Yeah, when Obama was running I bought me a couple of Obama shirts, and I was scared to wear it to Cowboy. I wore it to Hal and Mals, and still got shit from some hot white girl, but hey, it at least got her talking to me :) So I'm removing Dreamz from the conversation because I don't know anything about it and don't want to disparage it, but if I walk up in say Freelon's by myself, and I start hitting on and maybe dancing with some fine Nubian princess, am I gonna get called out for "stealing y'alls women?" My friends in Indiana actually had thia happen to them at a restaurant, which I found pretty hillarious. I mean if Tiger Woods can do it, why can't I?

Since I'm being called out, I gotta responsd. Yeah you are attacking me Kenneth, but it's cool. When you assume, you make an "ass" out of "u" and "me," but it's cool, I do struggle with race. I struggle with race because society and basically EVERYONE I know struggles with race. It is 2010, and Jackson-area schools are still largely segregated, its nightlife is segregated, its neighborhoods are segregated, its CHURCHES of all things are segregated, its romantic relationships/encounters/interludes are still segregrated. I remember when Obama was running, I would hear friends and family blithely comment "Well at least he'll get assassinated soon." What?! I thought this was 2010, but apparrently ain't a lot changed since 1910. I guess we all get to use the same bathrooms and water fountains now, but big freaking deal. I'd like to talk about someone I know without having to first answer the question "Is he white or black?" I'd like to go to a store or club without having to worry about what part of town it's own. I'd like to take a black woman out without her looking around the whole time paranoid that everyone is staring at her. I'd like turn on the tv without seeing Obama with a Hitler mustache painted on him because apparently a black man can't be president without being the reincarnation of Stalin. Alright I'm done! More rants to follow I'm sure. Also, God isn't real and Jesus is a lie.

And I do think Drummin' struggles with race and race paranoia, but at least he's talking about it openly, unlikely most people. Let's give him space to do that without attacks from any direction, and we all might get somewhere with this thread. A quick thought and I'm out: I used to feel like everyone was treating me weird when I was the only or one of the few white people in a room or neighborhood, and then I figured out it was my own self-consciousness and paranoia. Once I changed my attitude, I haven't had a problem. And I go everywhere in the city, often alone. It really is the white person's burden, for the most part. It was our people that made it this way; it's up to us to get past being uncomfortable trying to reach out, even if people don't color don't embrace us or give us a trophy for "daring" to cross Gallatin Street. The fact that we think we deserve one is a huge part of the problem.

All that said, as a woman, I don't like to go into any bar or club where men feel emboldened to grab my butt when I walk by -- whether it's a hip-hop place or a redneck joint, and it's happened in both. But that's an anti-woman thing, and has little to do with race. There are jerks of every color.

Out of line?! I was serious! I was going to do it as a peace offering. I figured that comment was the most benign/congenial/humorous remark that I made. I thought of it because I just heard about John Mayer in an interview saying that he had a "hood pass," that he was cool with the "brothers." He then went on to say his genitals were white supremacists though, which got him in trouble. Unlike John Mayer, mine aren't :: wink wink ; ) :: Now this comment might get me in trouble, but I don't care I like it! It's who I am! Don't censor me!

Hint: Talk about topic of the thread without personal attacks, slurs, unsubstantiated claims, etc., and you'll be fine. In other words, self-regulate so we can keep the forum intelligent and respectful. John Mayer isn't a model for any of us. And thanks, Kenneth. This won't become another CL, I assure you.
