The Clarion-Ledger tried to make a big deal out of new pages it was added to the Sunday edition, so we grabbed one to see what the big deal was. It turned out to be much ado about nothing. They have a page called "Dining/Shopping/Events" with the predictable kinds of Southern Style features they've already done. (Making us wonder if they're canning the Weekend section or such.) Ho, hum.
Two things about it were really puzzling, though. In their "One week out" corner, they listed 17 events for the entire next week. All but two are in Jackson, but Jackson has many, many more events than that in the next week. On some days, there are that many good things to do in 24 hours.
But the worst offense was the long "Shopping" strip down the side of the page with four product boxes: from Target, http://www.chiccouse.com, http://www.sonystyle.com and, get this, Office Max. There is no Office Max in Jackson, but there are outlets of the national chain in Vicksburg and Meridian.
Not a single local store was listed. Really, Ledger? This is what you made a big deal about debuting? This figures coming from the national corporation that owns the ShopLocal(TM) brand and uses it to promote national big-box outlets. But I truly wouldn't have expected them to be *this* obviously anti-local. Very sad.
Support local. Always.
