Former JPD spokesman Jeffery Scott is now working for the Hinds County Sheriff's Department.

Lt. Jeffery Scott has returned to law enforcement in the Jackson area. The former Jackson Police Department spokesman took a job with the Hinds County Sheriff's Department last week, after spending seven months with the Vicksburg Police Department.

Scott works with the Sheriff's Department's command staff, reviewing policy and recommending changes. He is spending his first few weeks examining the Department's operations at the Hinds County jail.

"I'm studying our operations from the ground up, and that gives me a chance to review and make recommendations that would be in the best interest of the Sheriff's Department and Hinds County," Scott said.

Scott left JPD in Sept. 2009, after 17 years of service, to take Vicksburg's deputy chief post.

"There were some creative differences in management styles but most importantly at the end of the day, my family and I decided that we did not want to uproot from the Clinton area and the Clinton school district," Scott said.

Scott, 42, is a Jackson native. He graduated from Provine High School and attended Kentucky State University and Jackson State University. He joined JPD in 1992 as a dispatcher and worked his way up to departmental spokesman after stints as a community-service officer and a police-academy trainer. He lives in Clinton with his wife, Angela, and two children.

Scott's long history with JPD is serving him well in his position. At a work session of the county Board of Supervisors this morning, he offered a detailed explanation of the department's computer records system, which he said could serve as a model as the county attempts to improve its databases of driver's licenses and outstanding fines.
