Jewell Davis is the new public information officer for the office of Jackson mayor Harvey Johnson, Jr.

Jewell Davis is soft spoken and polite, but when she talks about improving Jackson's future as a public information officer for the office of mayor Harvey Johnson Jr., her passion is evident.

"I love Jackson, it's not too big and it's not too small," Davis says. "There is a real diverse group of people, and overall it's just a great atmosphere. There are so many people willing to make a Jackson a great place--that passion really rubs off."

Davis, 26, has a bachelor's degree in mass communications from the University of Southern Mississippi, and she is currently pursuing a master's degree in public relations at Mississippi College. A native of Bay St. Louis, she moved to Jackson after graduation in 2006 to work as a public information officer in the city's department of public works, where she worked until last week.

As a public information officer for the mayor's office, Davis is responsible for informing citizens about the city's parks and recreation, and arts and culture programs.

Davis says she became interested in public relations from watching "Oprah" when she was younger.

"I watched (Oprah Winfrey's) passion to spread information to the public and it inspired me," Davis says. "It's important to get information out to the public and I enjoy the experience of meeting and learning from different people."
